:lol1: please help me people , iam new to the sign trade and need some help. i cant afford to buy one of those expensive foamex / signboard cutters yet so how is the best way to cut it , also is it better to fit the colored back ground vinyl before cutting the board.

cheapest way is by stanely knife. theres a bit of a nack to it but not hard. see demo area as we have a demo on it.

thank you for your reply. i have been using a stanley knife but it is quite difficult when i am cutting 5mm thick sheets at over 8 ft long , i wondered if a little circular saw my be any good?

    Stu,

As Rob says, a knife is the best way. Saw will obviously do the job but makes a real mess unless you’ve got an extraction vacuum. Better still, just get the supplier to cut larger sections for you – thats what I do 😀

circular saws are fine, use the proper blade though… thats a must.
your problems come in keeping it straight so having a guid of some sort is a must, uless you are happy freehand. also, powertools generate allot of shavings/dust etc so cleaning is much harder and that is paramount when it comes to applying the vinyl. spotless worktop/material etc

hi Stu take Rob and Nigel’s advice and either get it cut by supplier or use Stanley knife power tools! take it from me i have been there unless you have the ideal workshop you will be cursing about the dust etc for weeks
check out robs demo’s foamex cutting part 1 and 2 saved me time money and most important my fingers all nine of them!
i made a cutting edge from the demo’s in no time
also made a larger one which i can kneel on as i am cutting have posted a pic in show us your stuff to give you an idea
    all the best

Stu another way is to get an 8fft length of 3×2….clamp it at ether end of the sheet and use that as a guide for the saw ….just keep the saw hard up against the 3×2 ……..thats just a secondery idea …As dex and the boys have said its best to get the suppliers to do it for you

    Regards brian 😀

well i use a circuler saw with a fine blade in it …..you dont want a really chunnky blade designed to cut down the giant redwoods of canada 😀 😀
just something suttle …but as i say still if you can get the supplier to do it in future …i mean who needs the hassle

    😀 regards brian
