I know vinyl shouldn’t be stored on its side.

My digital media is fine as I have an enormous protable rack that keeps them safe.

We have a massive, nicely built unit on the first floor with pigeon holes, full of roll ends of vinyl. It’s been there years and was what my uncle got when he first started doing banners many moons ago. He learnt the hard way that you shouldn’t lie them down due to flat spots.

When they re-arrange the offices upstairs, I might be able to scrounge the unit. Should hold 50 610mm rolls, and will enable to me carry some stock, without getting in the way.

My idea was to line the bottoms of each slot with a thick upholstery foam to protect the rolls. It’s got to be better than resting on wood?? Or am I best letting it go to the skip?

Dave, have you seen the tutorial on making your own storage racks in the forum?

Another thing I did was get an mdf board, put 4 large casters on the bottom (the kind with brakes on) and then I went to B&Q and bought a load of metal table legs for £1.25 each and screwed them to it. For less than £50 I have a portable storage rack that holds about 30 rolls in an upright position.

I can wheel it around the workshop when i need to. I mostly keep my laminating stock on it and larger rolls.

I’ll see if i can take a picture and post it later

Yeah seen the tutorial. Actaully got some on another wall, but this rack will offer more storage for the space it will take up. That’s my thinking. Need a big sortout anyway.

The racks I have made will be modified to hold a smaller range of wider vinyl.

Just don’t wanna buy in some rolls for them to get wrecked lay on their sides.

Thinking about it Mo I might make one like you said.

I have decided I will stock the better of metamarks vinyl, in 610 and 1220 widths. Just not sure what colours:

Black and white are no brainers, blue and red, silver… Do I stock gloss and matt.

Not having any stock means those small jobs I could do for a tenner works out about 20 quid by the time I’ve ordered in a few meters of vinyl.

Hoping to order in enough choice to offer something for £x, or order that colour for £x.

when I order in a colour for a job (that’s probably usable on other jobs) I can always order more and keep it in stock.

I have been getting lazy and printing jobs I could cut.

Another question- does vinyl have a shelf life, the rolls I have inherited (loads of oracal) could be 10 years old? Should I bin the lot and start from scratch???
