Whats the best way to do them?
I did some last week but was not happy with the results.

I took on the job to help someone, as they had a tight deadline to work to, out and it has now come back and bit me in the bum.

I used clear vinyl double ink pass, and high quality, to avoid any banding issues. I then mounted on customer supplied 4mm white acrylic, which was very translucent, prints were not to a standard I would have liked, and looked washed out, especially a faded background in the design.

What materials do you find give the best results? substrate and print,
and any tips on print settings?

When I did some backlit menu photo prints I bought backlit media which is opaque and semi rigid. The finished items were sandwiched between an opal sheet and a clear sheet. This also means they are easy to change when the time comes.
I think the backlit media I used came from Hexis.

I’ve found printing onto clear using a normal profile works fine ours is set to 4 pass which is actually 8 pass because its a 2×4 machine. Recently did one where it was printed onto clear and then mounted onto opal looked 100 times better than the back lit printable stuff as it seems to have an off white look to it.

4 pass or 8 pass is not what I meant, the ink still looks washed out, even at 16 pass, on clear, but two layers of ink does make the image better, not great, but better.
Sorry, if I am confusing passes with overprint

I knew that was just saying how we print onto backit.

Strange, because we never usually overprint, what profile and media are you using.
