whats the best way of bending aluminium?
Posted by Nathan on 12 January 2006 at 19:12I need to bend the end of an aluminum 12"x 20" sheet to create a hook to hang over scaffolding. Can anybody give me any advice on the best way to do this.
Thanks

I think without a roller or press brake it will be dificult to get a nice radius.
I would bend to smaller pieces of alli say 25mm x 3mm to make two hooks and rivet to the blank.
(By the way you will need at least 6″ of the plate to form the hook)Do you know of a friendly fabrication shop nearby?
What thinkness of plate by the way?

Nathan,
you could try this, but use a scaffold tube as a former. and you would need to rotate the blank when you get past 90 degreesThe “stretcher” needs to be under the blank, and the legs resting on the table though

Sorry just noticed as well, you would need to put the plate at the edge of the table

Peter – Thanks for the link, what’s the “stretcher” that’s shown in the diagram?

refer back to the post by Russ, the stretcher is the bit of timber that is used as a lever to bend the plate, he called it a stretcher because in effect it looks like one, (the type you carry casualties on) but in effect you could use timber screwed together to make an “H” shape.
Hope this makes it a bit clearerPeter

Hello 😀
You might ask someone who is an electrician they have tools to bend pipe that you might be able to use to give you the hook you are looking for.
Good Luck.
