whats the best vinyl for me to practice on?
Posted by LeeMorris on 18 November 2006 at 15:48Hopefully i will have a cutter next week and need to get some vinyl to practise with.
I’ve been looking at vinyl corp and wondered what best for me to buy for practising with.
Cheers Lee

why vinyl corp?
if just practising, then obviously cheapest is best. but remember that when you move to a decent make the vinyl characteristics are different, so you will find applying it different/harder.

I have been quite pleased with the Oracal family of vinyl.
A rule of thumb for me is the cheaper the substrate the cheaper the vinyl…
Like 541 for correx signs as opposed to 851 for vehicle lettering.
One of the nice things about Oracal is that their white vinyl has a blue backing material which makes it easier to see what to weed and what to keep!

i dont know which cutter you have decided on but if its a graphtec and a new 1 you will recieved about 4/5 box’s of samples from metamark which i thought was a real nice touch from them, i think there was 4/5 rolls of there 7series vinyl 5mtrs on each roll, roll of app tape half a dozen squeqies(carnt spell ) scalpel and more but carnt remember all of it, keep you bizzy for weeks 😛

Love….JillI have not used Oracal, but the vinyl I use has this as well. I think it’s the best invention since sliced bread.
My distributor actually told me some people don’t like it. Don’t know why.

There is a thread knocking about "Hassle free vinyl supplier" – it’ll have all the best companies to deal with there.
When you go into production – remember your reputation. Don’t put anything under a 5 year out (especially on vehicle liveries) or you may live to regret it!

Sounds good if i get some freebies with cutter . Not sure on Graphtec or Summa yet , got to check final prices.
I don’t intend using cheap vinyl , doesn’t look good being called back to peeling letters.

I was going to use Grafityp they are ony up the road from me.
Are they any good?
There seems to be so many makes i don’t really which to use.

Graphtyp are good. They have a nice range, good choice of colours. Fast, friendly staff and stock loads of the other bits signmakers need.
Give them a call & request the latest brochure.
They’re not my main supplier, but they have been very reliable the times I have used them.

Also worth considering a local supplier to avoid delivery charges, if you are able to collect. Means you can order small amounts more frequently.
Just had a delivery from grafytip yesterday, pronto service!

Lee you should pop in and ask for me, I will make you a cuppa myself then answer any questions regarding what vinyls to use for different applications.
At least it will keep me off the phone for a while 😀
