  • what would be the best colour for changing?

Posted by Peter Normington on 6 June 2008 at 08:08

I would like to hear what vinyl others would recommend for just a colour change, (new type transit so not complex) it needs to be reasonably easy to remove in a year or two.
would you use a laminate as well or just vinyl?

    Hi Peter

I can only comment on what I have used and that was Avery 900 cast, it was nice to work with but battled because it was thin and my lack of experience, also not sure how easily it would remove in a year or two 😕

    Sorry not much help.

    Cheers

don’t want to Hijack this one Peter, but I would also be interested to hear peoples views on this. In my case though, removal not so important. Mine will be on a smart car though!

    Peter,

We use a lot of 900 for partial colour changes, but if it was complete coverage, then we’d go for a wrap material.

Why laminate? The only reason for lamming a print is to protect the microscopically thin layer of ink. We don’t lam cut vinyl, so why should we need to do it to any other plain colour vinyl?

John, I was looking at using 9800,
oracal 851 or avery, but I have been told that a laminate aids fitting and helps make removal easier, thats why I asked, just wondered what other do

Well, I wouldn’t want to argue with whoever told you that Peter but I would have thought that doubling up on the thickness wouldn’t help application any. Quite the reverse in fact.

Also I can’t see a calendared like 9800 sticking for very long around the curves and the gutter at the back top corners.

Personally, if I was wrapping a van then I would use a wrapping material. We see enough failures out on the road without asking for trouble ourselves by using something not designed for the job.

I would use the KMPF Vehicle Wrap/Taxi Conform. The colour range is limited but its the best wrapping vinyl that I have come across. Its already a nice thick material, so will probably not need laminating.

I usually buy from Hexis but I know you can also buy from KPMF Direct.

    Hi Peter,
I do a lot of this type of thing and the type of vinyl i would use would depend on the colour.
    White – Metamark MD5
Black – Mactac 9800 pro series
Colours – Oracal 870 wrapping vinyl, Mactac 9800 pro series, VWS.
They can all be removed after 2 years no problem.
The removal of vinyl, no matter how long it’s been on the vehicle is all technique anyway.

    Cheers
    Ewan.

Peter what did you use in the end? Got a partial wrap coming up and would be interested to hear how you got on with this.

    Thanks

The customer decide not to go with a wrap, but I uysed the kpmf mentioned above on a smart car, easy to use, but be carefull of the static!

it also can be a bit brittle at lower temps

Thanks Peter, I’m leaning towards Avery 900 as it seems to get a good write up from John and it’s from our usual supplier, may try and get a workable sample. I’ll look into the kpmf as an alternative.

I’m concerned that using Grafywrap leaves me at a disadvantage for colour changes as it’s so easy to use! Will find out on this Focus – thankfuly not brand new!

How did your guys find it for fitting Dave?

I’m waiting for a sample to come through, hopefully get on ok with it as it’s going to be a pretty smart job when done!
