  • what widths of vinyl can people handle and apply?

Posted by Nathan on 30 January 2006 at 21:51

As I’ve never really seen another sign maker in action I wondered what sort of widths people can handle and apply taped text / graphics easily using the dry method. When I get round the 12" width things sometimes start to go pear shaped.

    Thanks
    Nathan

its not the easiest but i do do it now and again.
i can apply 54inch by 100″ to the side of a rigid sided truck, dry, on my own with cast vinyl on a warmish day, (there is a difference). i dont find this hard at all, BUT… initial alignment of each panel is tricky.

    :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

the vinyl is normally plain cast or digital printed vinyl, “solid panels”

that video demo i did in the rain shows me applying one of these panels.
to be honest, i actually depend on the tack of the vinyl to help me apply.
sounds a bit daft i know but… when i am fitting vinyls i always get folk saying, “i bet your a dab hand at hanging wallpaper” fact is, im crap at it. hate doing it…

For cut vinyl, I rarely go above 2′ (as use 2′ wide tape). Sometimes I’ll go up to 4 or 5′ wide if I need to keep a logo in one piece for application on a window or a sheet of foam. Vans – I try not to go over 2′ when working dry (indoors) as the warm temp can make it grab a bit much for repositioning & come apart at the tape overlap.

If on my own, 8 or 9′ long is about as much as I can handle. As after that handling is a nighmare & I’ll grab one of the lads to hold an end.

    quote Rob Lambie:

“i bet your a dab hand at hanging wallpaper”

I get people saying “bet you’re good at making pastry”,

    WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!?

I did about 4/5 ft by 2 ft today on a van, that’s pretty much the level I feel comfortable at, and if I try and cut anything larger on our ancient camm1 it runs off badly and does all kinds of funky stuff.

I’ve done up to 4ft by 8ft ali panels but that’s not cut or taped.

I can only imagine that Ramj is either using a roller to apply, or the heel of his hand, to get the vinyl on! (?) :nagnag:

I have a 24″ cutter, so limited on width, although have done up to 12 feet in length. Always use the hinge method, divide up into easier portions once aligned & taped in place.

Doing vehicles I try and stay at 1m to 1.2 wide, 900mm is my most comfy width. Length depends on the job.
