just been asked to provide two signs 16ft x 8ft for a football ground.

the graphics going on are just vinyl and he’s not sure whether he wants it in a frame or not.

if he does’nt want the frame, will foamboard survive the weather without buckling?

if he does have the frame, how can i keep all the panels together?

    what would you suggest?

never done anything bigger than 8 x 4

foam board will buckle what ever, i am taking it that to cover 16’x8′ you are going to use 4 x 8’x4′ sheets portrait orientation. the mounting of these will depend on several factors what is behind them arer they open to xtreme windy conditions etc. For arguments sake if the boards are to be mounted to a wall i would

use 10mm foamex any thinner and its own sheer weight will cause it to buckle.

use sign frame it is avaliable for 10mm boards if you ask your supplier

use loads of panel locks along the jointing edge any expansion should be practically un-noticeable

fit pedestals to wall so that panel cannot be pushed in, you could also screw in to with white topped screws or caps etc, to add additional security (could be made of off cuts)

However if its just a case of screwing to the wall etc, screw via slots in the foamex using screw caps and don’t over tighten so that the boards can expand and contract. The problem with this method is that once a gap as ocurred it will not close its self.

If it is anywhere near the pitch foamex is too brittle. The first time a ball hits it there will be a crack.

If it is going onto a flat surface I would use dibond. No expansion worries, no cracking worries and, with plenty of fixings, you can sleep at night when the wind is howling.

Go with the dibond as there’s not a lot of difference in price between dibond and 10mm Foamalux

but theres definitly a difference in durability etc as John says
