  • what vinyl lights up at night?

    Hi all.

I’ve a job coming up for a mate, basically Transit van with vinyl only. He has said he wants a faint logo in the background of the design that will light up when headlights hit it at night.

Now, what I can say is it is not reflective or flourescent he is looking but Frosted/etched vinyl. I know form making number plates that a logo in the background stands out very well at night but this may be down to the reflective on the plate.

So, long story short; Is there a vinyl available that is a very light grey/silver by day but has reflective qualities by night?

I hope that makes some sort of sense :lol1:

Yes, standard white reflective. Looks greyish/white/silver in daylight – white at night with lights on it.

Be CAREFUL – the vehicle lighting regulations class reflective vinyls as a light source. So it is specifically mentioned – NO red on front – NO white on rear. You CAN, however, put small amounts on as part of a livery (eg, Telewest/BT does it), but be aware that if ‘plod’ decides that it might confuse drivers because you’ve got huge panels of white on the back it’ll have to come off….there & then. 👿

The ‘dusted crystal’ etched glass film has lots of little spangly bits in it and can look amazing over paintwork – but it’s not in anyway special at night – it’s better in sunlight.

Oracle do a silver metalic. it hardley shows on white backgrounds. although not reflective, it is very glossy, and does show up very well in light.

I am not quite sure about Daves comments regarding reflective. I am still waiting for a definitive answer to the legal aspects of the use of reflective . That is, a conviction in the courts for its mis-use,

I don’t think it’s ever gone to court. I’m jut saying that nearly all the supplier advise reflcetive to be treated as a light source & by the same token, ‘reflectors’ used on vehicles must corespond to the correct colour as dictated in the lighting regs.

There is however huge grey areas in the law regarding the use of coloured light sources. eg. Boy racers with underbody neon are apparently legal as it’s only the glow & not the lamps that shows. But putting red sidelights in their cars & they car expect a fine – same would apply to putting red reflectors on front of vehicle / white on rear. Dumb I know but that’s the letter of the law – not necessarily the spirit. I’m only advising caution for excessive use of reflectives.
