  • what vinyl can be used for roof top marking on caravans?

Posted by Ken Christensen on 15 November 2006 at 12:06

We have to make lettering with registration number for the roof of a caravan – security marking which can be spotted by police cameras, etc.
Any suggestions which vinyl to use? Presumably a ‘plastic’ roof.
Customer is worried about removing it when/if he sells caravan.

We just use a 3-5 year vinyl but we use the postcode rather than the registration number. You will always get some wally changing his vehicle shortly after applying the vinyls. Caravan roofs are not load bearing so DON’T climb on the thing ( unless it’s a Tabbert caravan ) or you will end up in the caravan.

The old bill use blue reflective with a 15mm black non-reflective outline. 12 inch letter. I presume this is for maximum visibility from the helicopter, which is probably overkill for a caravan so I don’t know why I’m telling you this really!

    Interesting though, wasn’t it?

    Hi,

We use normal 5-7 year black.
We were asked by the local plod not to do postcodes because apperantly crooks were standing on motorway bridges on bank holidays, taking down the postcodes and robbing the house…. Can you believe it.

    Cheers

A postcode tends to be for a complete road so I don’t see mr.plods concern

Our postcode covers about 6 houses. Anyway, all the burglars would have to do was look out for the house with the garden gnomes and the big dead patch of grass on the front lawn where the caravan sits. 🙂

The reflective was Avery XR1000. We sprocketed it ourselves and printed the black on the edge. That company doesn’t exist any more so I don’t know if you can get sprocketed reflective. I would have thought you could.

Of course, it may be better to lay reflective on top of of black which will make it much easier to remove when the time comes.

yes you can get spocketed reflective printable for the edge from spandex, and maybe other suppliers but I know spandex do it, we used to have a customer that had red checkers on white reflective, in the past bought it from the place Andy mentioned. when they went printed our own.
I imagine you could cut normal vinyl in black just larger than the blue and overlay them. as Andy says makes easier removal if laid on normal vinyl 😀
