  • what type of material do you use for cutting on?

Posted by Simon Polakof on 4 September 2008 at 15:49

I’ve seen a post before cutting boards and according to it most of you out there use a mirror board. But I saw that Rob used another board for cutting a applying the application tape. So I was wondering what all you that don’t use mirror boards use?
We have an mdf board covered with special cutting carpets, they are old and we need to replace them. But before we invest in such expensive carpets I was thinking of checking out what you all used.

mod-edit please post in the correct forum

I use a small cutting mat for small stuff, also I use an old mirror to cut on as this doesn’t score but goes through blades pretty quickly and I also use my foam-board off cuts but after a few cuts the grooves can start to make the blade wander then I just turn it over and use the other side.

    8’x4′ sheets of 3mm polypropylene.

    Cheap (£25 a sheet) & virtually indestructible.

Been using mine for four years and it’s probably slightly overdue for replacement, that’s about 3 years, 11 months, 3 weeks and 4 days longer than a sheet of foamed PVC…and it doesn’t kill blades.

    It’s also non-stick & non-static.

I think the cutting mats are made from polypropylene but they charge a whole lot more than £25 for them the only difference is probably the mats are printed with a grid on them (which I never use anyway). They are described as self healing. Thanks for the tip Dave think I will get a sheet of that in.

I get mine from my local Stockline Plastics, but I’m sure many of the more ‘industrial’ plastics suppliers will do it.

And it’s not the same as polyethylene…

did a web search for an online supplier.

    prices not too bad either.

I use an MDF bench top with clear acrylic or thick PVC sheet on top to cut on. It’s not as good as a large cutting mat but the surface is large and flat
