  • What the heck is my job title?

I’m sure like me, many of you are business owners and general sign makers.

We are all so multi skilled (which is great), but to the point where it’s difficult to define our job titles.

The problem is, I will be hiring to replace myself in the new year and am struggling to define the job title.

So in order of priority, on a daily basis, I might be doing:

    • Sales (Account Manager role)
    • Manufacturing and Production
    • Pre-print
    • Design
    • Stock and Inventory

Many more sub-roles on occasion, but it’s a team of 8, so mostly everything else is covered by other staff.

What would you advertise the job title as for yourself if you are in a similar position to me?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! 😀

If you are looking for someone to do general type signwork the same as you do then why not advertise for a signmaker 😆 😆

You will add the skills that are essential & those that would be a bonus when you pad the advert out. If you already have staff how did you advertise other positions??

I went to Sign UK one year & when I filled out the online pre registration I put General Dogsbody in the job title box. Spent the day wandering round SignUK with a badge that said Martin Pearson General Dogsbody, no one said anything though 😆 😆

Ha! Yeah, that’s what I feel like sometimes… Just a slightly better paid dogsbody!

A lot of our team were here from the beginning and being such a small company, the hiring process used to be word of mouth.

‘General Manager’ seems like a good option for now, thanks Phil.

Maybe General Manager – Signage and Print ?

    General Manager.
But sounds more like Production Manager. dont keep adding words to it, just comes over a bit pretentious.

I am not a big fan of titles, especially in small companies.
As soon as one is given, not all, but the person automatically thinks certain work criteria is beneath them.

Sign making is so diverse that to be a good one you must have experience and a skill set in most aspects of it.
I have been in this game 27 years. and day to day you will mostly find me in workwear. Not because i need to be while sat in an office, but because if it is required i will jump in a van and go fit a sign, deliver one, fit vinyl, fix a printer, dig a hole etc. etc. i will do what it takes… and so should the employee.
