  • What software to create a catalogue of images?

Posted by Adam McGuire on 27 April 2006 at 18:39

I’m in need of a little assistance! I wish to put together a catalogue of images I can cut for some of my customers. The only problem is I can’t get anything to work with the EPS and AI files. I’ve tryed Corel Paint Shop Pro X and it didn’t like the AI’s! I thought maybe I should convert everything to a Jpg and create a catalogue from that….

Any ideas on what I can use?

Is the catalogue print or computer based?

I’d like to do either, preferably both. Essentially, a printed copy which I can leave at my mates shop for people to look through and order what they want, it’d also help me find the art as the CDs/DVDs I have a a bit messy so far as file management goes! So thumbnails with file name would be good!

First off, you would need to create a data base to enable you to be able to find your images easily from the name/number reference etc.
you could then create pdf index pages or use something like portfolio to show images on disc.

I dont know if there is an easy way to do this, perhaps one of our programing boffins can advise?

    Hi Adam
If you google ‘thumbs plus’ it is software that can open most files and create catalogues and slide shows etc. You can buy on line and it is reasonable cost.
I use it all the time mainly because you can view a CD with images and then drag and drop into most programmes.
    Hope this helps.

you want a program called "Portfolio" by Extensis, it will make thumbnails from AI and EPS files, but get version 6 because the newer versions 7 and 8 are crap and does’nt work with AI or EPS any more. I think its a bug in their new software that they havent noticed yet.

    Hi,

Thumbs plus wouldn’t read most of the AI files on the disk I got, probably got no previews saved. I think I will try Portfolio. I can’t find version 6 anywhere though! I have the browser for version 6, just not the main program.

    Any ideas?

Same thoughts there….. dodgy disks on ebay! People seem to be selling lots of software…..I’d have thought that was against eBay rules?

I’d like to thumbnail them all without having to open them up and re-save them! I hope I can do it!

The acee dcee is genuine, the clipart disc was iffy, gave a tenner for it,
all it had on it was all the genuine discs that I already had ( they all can be viewed with acdc) Just bought it and then reported the seller to ebay. (having obtained the evidence) Not that they did owt about it though.

    Hi Adam,

Well I use Quark Xpress and its very good software for layout placing images with these format (.tiff) (.eps) and (jpeg). As well it can go up to 100 pages or more. and after your catalogue is done you can save a pdf from it for Web viewers or collect for output for your printer is you want to print it collect to output means it will collect all your font used in the file along with the images and create a folder for you for the project ur doing. If you need help with Quark or Indesign that as well very similar just let me know.

Thanks, will have a look for a demo of Quark… the demo of ACDSee didn’t show any thumbnails I tried! I’ll keep working at it!

Hi Adam, If none of the other recommendations work try Picasa2, its a free download and it should read all files and catalogue them for you.

Thanks for the replies! I’ve not found anything that’ll work as I want at the moment, but I’ve not checked your ideas yet. I have downloaded Picasa 2 and will try out later.

Lorraine, I looked at that too as I have the viewer. Was a little annoyed at the price tag!

Thanks Shane, will check these out later on today…just researching for my in-car PC. Oh and looking to replace my CCTV capture card with a better one as someone attempted to get into nearly every house in the village last night!

you need my dog mate…. NO ONE gets to our house without my dog knowing first. Trouble is, we have possums eating our passionfruit…. She hates possums too…. a vicious bark at 2am, you have to scrape me off the ceiling… at least burglars are quieter :lol1:
