  • what size of groove do i need to use with lightbox?

HI, we’re fitting an opal acrylic sign to an existing lightbox, that looks like it was ‘homemade’ ( it is well made, sturdy and secure ).

I just want to check that the groove in it ( it is 5mm deep) is an acceptable size for a groove.

Also what size groove is normal for a lightbox?

And what is the minimum size groove a lightbox should have to ensure that the face doesn’t ‘pop out’?

    Thanks

    Danny

Danny, Ideally the panel should hang in the frame from the top, and have a least 3mm clareance top and bottom. If you are fitting the panel to sit in the bottom groove then 5mm at the top is not really enough, if you are to leave a gap for a bit of expansion. and sliding the panel in. How deep is the panel?

Danny, the light boxes I do here are about 15 – 20mm deep edging, and 5mm wide if I’m using 3.5mm perpsex, or 6mm wide if I’m using 4.5mm perspex.

It does depend on the height of the panel. 3.5mm perspex can bow if it is a large sheet, so 4.5mm is preferred. Small boxes, 3.5mm will be more than enough.

Certainly the ‘hanging’ method that peter refers to, I’d only use on a very large sheet. Normally, the ‘slide’ method works for most standard boxes tho.
