  • what shelf-life has a roll of vinyl got?

Posted by Lee Harris on 29 June 2005 at 08:59

    Hi All

Does anybody know if vinyl has a ‘Shelf’ life – you know a sell by date. We have a lot of part rolls/end of rolls, some going back 3 years and I am tying to have a clear out.

One supplier says that there vinyl – Hexis – has a shelf life of 3 years. Would I be able to use that as a guide – apart from calling every maker of vinyl.

    Regards
    Lee

Vinyl does have a shelf life. but alot depends on the quality and make of the vinyl, sorry can’t be more helpful than that

Just an extra thought, alot will also depend under what conditions the vinyl has been stored under, i.e heat, humidity etc

A good rule of thumb Lee, is 2 years. Most suppliers would not want stock on their shelf longer than that, as it may sit for a while with the client. If the tape sits for 2 years at the wholesaler, you have, at best, only got another year to be safe, from what I have been told. Only an odd colour would be likely to sit that long tho.

If your tape is stored in a hot environment, the life is shorter.

My suppliers tell me that tape should be ideally stored in an airconditioned environment to get the best life out of the roll.

i agree… vinyls, particularly shorter life nes become brittle over time. some shrink a bit on roll and are bad for weeding. some when rolled out flat start to sorta ripple leaving the ripples proud of the backing paper.
some folk may have seen this happen with reflectives and mirror foils?
always a pain when the blade snags them.
having said that, you could just make up some small safetey signs and cheap fun signs to sell in your reception area off the shelf? 😕
