  • What’s wrong when a gilders tip refuses to pick up gold?

Posted by Graze on 16 July 2007 at 15:11

    Hi all
What’s the problem when a gilders tip refuses to pick up the gold (well white gold)??
I’ve tried everything, rubbing on my hair, neck, jumper and still it just falls off the tip. The tip is a Squirrel Hair Whistler I’ve had for 20 years. All I have to do is a 3" no 6 on a bit of glass….any help appreciated as the next step is going to be launching the bit of glass into the bin or using vinyl (scrub that last thought, I don’t want to admit defeat with 25 yrs signwriting under my belt).

    Any ideas appreciated…….

    Graze,

Your hair is too dry….the tip needs to pick up a little oil. Really!.

Rub just a little Vaseline on the back of your hand and run your gilders tip over it…..that should do the trick.

    Hope I’m not too late.

Another good place is your face where your nose joins your cheek, always a little oily there. Rub the tip down from up by your eye.

All the vinyl guys probably think we’re a bit weired if they read this.

    Hope this works.

Yes but even a vinyl guy can use nose grease to take off Stabilo marks.
(It helps to be both traditional and modern)

Cant help really, but we were just talking about gold leaf.
lynn’s got so much static she quite often sends sparks to me.
Maybe I can rent her out to gilders?

    Thanks everyone……..
Well, I didn’t wash the ‘barnet’ this morning deliberately and I tried the nose grease area thing. I’ll try that vaseline trick though and let you know.
I’m not even sure what leaf it is. It’s about 8-10 yrs old though. It may be white gold as I can see some tarnishing around some of the leaves. I did have some Palladium somewhere…….
