Hi, forgive me, I’m new at this 😳

What plotters can I use with my Edge2 to profile cut? I already have a graphtec fc3100-60 but afaik this isn’t compatible – doesn’t have any registration detection type stuff I don’t think. ?

I want to get something cheap preferably (2nd hand I guess) and something that’s going to be easy to get cutting for the Edge. I hear there are other plotters than Gerber ones capable of doing Edge stuff but I’m not really sure what to look for.

So far pretty happy with my edge machine – Ideally I’d have got something like a versacamm sp300 (and a laminator), but I couldn’t really justify the costs yet and prices seemed to be similar to when they were new. 😀

only a sprocket-ed feed cutter will do the job properly,
so you are limited to a gerber plotter, (I am almost sure the sprocket spacing is a gerber patent) and its very rare to find them for sale as a separate item, never buy an edge without the plotter, its like buying
    a car without wheels.

Gerbers were more expensive than a versacamm when new, and still hold their prices second hand, They can still outrun inkjets for many specialised jobs though,

Hey Peter, thanks for the info.
I think for me I’m a bit of an unusual sort (haha) and have never used a cutter for my edge stuff – nor really wanted to. When I took the step and got my own machine it wasn’t really a consideration because I print on clear and it’s the end user that’s responsible for cutting individual things out, that’s how most similar products are in my realm, model decals.
Being able to expand what I can offer would be nice – to be honest I’m hoping to move over to a versacamm (obviously that must be cut always) at some point in the distant future as it’s more suited to my art skills and although I’d miss what I can do on the Edge2, I’d be able to do far more things on the versacamm I think.

When I got my own edge2 the chap I got it from mentioned I think it was a summa that he used – I guess thats a friction feed and I’m not sure what registration was like as he’d sold it previously and the things he showed weren’t as critical as I’d need so it was hard to tell.
A second hand Gerber plotter would be ideal as they’re small and I don’t have masses of space – but I guess they are expensive compared to lesser plotters, but if they do the job I’d happily consider anything. I’m just not sure what to look out for as I’m not really familiar with registration stuff having never really used it.

A Summa only needs 3mm/5mm squares as registration marks, these can be manually placed at even spaces. It may be easier to put these marks on and print them export the job to either Corel or as AI and then cut from Corel (using Wincut that comes with the Summa) or import the AI directly into WinCut. If you generate in Corel Wincut can automatically place your marks but that would need exporting to Omega or whatever drives the Edge.

It maybe worth contacting Spandex, they have some good deals on at the moment, we recently upgraded to Omega 3.0 and to give them credit we had a good deal and the service was fantastic, couldn’t fault them.

When I say good deals they are a lot more competitive but still substantially more than the graphtec, but a sound investment.
