what method will i use to apply pinstripes wet or dry?
Posted by Steve Bird11 on 22 August 2008 at 21:22Hi folks, need a bit of advice plz…I dont normally deal with vehicle graphics but have agreed to do a "mates rates" job for a friends 2 vehicles, part of the design is 2 1" parallel pinstripes down either side of the vans,…I know most of you cuss when anybody mentions wet application but as the lines are perfectly straight and there are no doors to shorten the stripes how could i get the stripes perfectly straight without wet application? The stripes are nearly 3mtrs long so if i use a hinge vertically in the middle of the stripes theres no way these would come out perfectly straight is there?? Also one of the vehicles side panels was resprayed today (fri) and he’s looking to have the vinyl installed next tuesday, is he pushing it a bit with the paint being fully dry/cured by then?? hopes this makes sense as just had a few jack d’s and am starting to get warm ears! 🙂
Mr Normingtons away for the weekend so am banking on some other kind soul offering advice
Thanks in advance!

On the rare occasion when I’ve done pinstriping (with tape not paint) I buy it by the roll at the auto parts store.
I apply it dry. And preferably out of the sun.
I will run a line of regular masking tape down the side of the vehicle very near where I want to apply the striping, as a guide.
Measure off a length of the tape, more generous than what you need.
(I get the stuff that is a thick and a thin stripe on one roll, held together with a clear overcoat)
Then I start at the back of the car or truck with the striping and walk my way to the front, eyeballing it with the masking tape as I go.
Step back and see if it looks OK.
If it does, squeegee it down gently at first (it can shift) then more firmly, working from the center out.
Then peel off the clear layer, pulling it flat back against the pinstripe tape so as not to lift it. Then CAREFULLY trim the ends to fit with a brand new razor knife. I think a straight vertical cut looks best.
The front piece, on the end, take the thinner stripe and bring it up over the thicker stripe to make a point.
Then remove your guideline masking tape and cut between the door openings, trimming those ass needed.
Repeat the procedure on the other side.
That’s how I do it, probably wrong too, but I am a girl. For your parallel stripes, I would use a strip of masking tape on the top, apply the first stripe underneath, then get fineline tape and apply it as the spacer between, then the other parallel stripe. Remove the guide tapes. Trim the ends and between the doors as desired.

Bingo, Thanks Jill 😀 Thought the best way might be to draw a line with a ceramic pen and try to follow that line but would struggle to see it through the app tape. Thanx for your swift reply!!!! your brothers seemed like good fun whilst u were growing up by the way!…..only have a sister and she wasn’t much good at the mischief side of things whilst growing up so i could have done with brothers like yours lol 😀

Cut 3 stripes all butted up next to each other the full length needed, make the middle stripe your 1" stripe and make the outer stripes about 3" each, apply the whole 7" strip in one go with app tape, because it is wide it will stay straight and true, after removing app tape pull off outer 3" stripes to be left with the 1" stripe only, use the same process for any amount of stripes, the theory is the same, a wide stripe will stay straight during application.
Hope that helps
cheers

Damn that’s a fab idea Warren.
Leave it to a man to make it easy.Steve, my brothers are still a pain, at family gatherings they still wrassle.
My youngest son is scared of them.
They are well-meaning, not mean, but he gets sick of the dutch rubs and noogies.
And one of the brothers is a magistrate.
My quiet oldest brother used to cut my doll’s noses off.
The younger two used to hold me down and tickle me till I wet my pants, then tattle to Mom that I’d had an accident!

Thanks Warren thats a good idea also, …the stripes are 1" wide and theres 2 of them side by side so would you recommend doing 5 stripes and taking out the top, middle and bottom ones or would 4 stripes be enough?? was impressed with the bmw you wrapped as well mate, looked a tricky one for you to start off with!!! when you went on the wrapping course did they teach you anything about the layout side of things or was it just purely the installation side of things? cheers mate.

Love….JillLol they definately sound like mischief and my kind of brothers…Although i’m all grown up now and not supposed to get upto mischief!! what the hell is dutch rubs and noogies tho?? I’ve heard of dutch ovens but i’m pretty sure even your brothers wouldnt do that to you!!!!!!

No, they do that to their wives.
😉
Dutch Rub: to rub your knuckles across the top of someones head whilst holding their head under your other armNoogies: See Dutch Rub, see also Indiann burns: when someone puts their hands on someone else’s arm and then twists their skin in different directions
Thankfully they only gave wedgies to my nephews.

lol….jeez they are lil scamps aren’t they!!! we call them Chinese burns this side of the pond for some reason. If you want payback for your brothers then get them to bend one of their arms, dampen the back of your hand and slowly rub his arm in circular motion at the top of his forearm right on the elbow joint and when he straightens his arm listen to him yelp when all the hairs pull tight and he has loads of tangled up baubles of hair which he has to cut out lol. If he has silky smooth skin then i’ll have to think of something else lol.

Steve
As long as the over-all width is wide enough to keep it straight when applying then you can do it any way you want, jut position the 2 stripes the correct distance apart and leave the inner strip on until applied as well as an outer strip or 2 depending on overall width.
The wrapping course touched slightly on layout but nothing really about design etc, 99% fitting techniques.
