    Hi everyone

Well the time has come where i need to do a facelift on my own place, as it was only meant to be a temporary sign in the first place!

Ok here’s what i have to work with:

The sign is 3mm brushed aluminium plate, with car window tint film to show the brushed effect in the sun, and the letters are 3mm alu too, raised about 8mm from the plate.
I want to keep the sign itself, but put some sort of facia board behind.

Im thinking black – but what to make it from, i dont want any joins if possible.
I also need to keep it CHEAP!

The pillars either side of the photo are my boundry, so i make that about 3.5m width.

I also intend to illuminate it somehow.. but how..

mod-edit please use descriptive headings for topics

Is your business Computers or Signs? :lol1:

Both, the computer shop’s gone quiet at the mo with the "credit crunch", so the signage is keeping me ticking over, and very busy!

    Any ideas David? 🙂

If keeping the original sign, have a carpenter make you a long wooden panel that you can mount to the fascia. Make it as long as your area and about 4" taller than the old sign. Stain it the same color as your door trim. Seal it with exterior polyurethane so it will last outdoors.
Then mount the old sign off to the left edge on the new wooden panel, and add built-up letters (gemini type) that say SIGNS in either silver metallic or a light grey color. When you light it (however you do that, I’m not an electrician) it will look very high-end and dramatic.

    Thats good Jill.

Like how you’ve took wood affect from the shop and brought it into the sign design.

    That looks really good Jill.

As for lighting. it’s difficult to say because as there is no existing lighting you will probably need planning permission and different councils have different ideas about what they will accept. Best bet is to apply for what most other businesses in the area have.

    Hey Darkcat,
remember me with the DX4000, how many replacements? I’ve seen your sign in the flesh and liked it anyway, all I would do with that is put a larger panel of brushed ally behind what you already got. A sheet of twobond from amari aint that expensive and by the time you sold someone signs from your offcuts it will be free.
Like Jills Idea too, but, timber that size!! few bob mr. 😉

HI all and thanks for your ideas.

I see where your going there Jill, not sure the wood really suits the shop inside somehow, but good idea!

Also – given that the shop itself is primarily a computer shop – i need to use that as the theme, the signage is done from there too, but i dont really advertise it there.

Martin – Yes i know, theyre funny round here!! I have the inspector coming tomorrow to tell me what i can/cant do…

Dave – Hi!!! Yes i remember, still have your card on my desk! and thanks, took me ages to make those letters! Yes, given the surrounding signs, it would be best to be a flat board as a back-panel, but i dont think ill get away with brushed alu where i am, as much as i might like to! So im thinking maybe some sort of treated plywood, sanded and painted.. black.

I had a look at the amari site just now, but cant find anything called twobond, could they call it something else?

    Thanks

They do reynobond & amaribond, but not sure wich is the brushed ally, but I would just ring & ask one of the lads to send you a sample.

hmmmm, well just had the conservation officer over –

    Looks like i cant have a back-board >:-(

i tried to sweet talk her a bit – then she decided the small projecting sign needed permission… bugger.

    right! to photoshop!
