  • what material can i use for a shop counter face?

Posted by Warren Beard on 29 April 2008 at 21:42

    Hi All

A customer of mine wants the front of his shop counter covered with some material and vinyl graphics applied.

Dibond will dent if kicked or knocked with a briefcase etc, Foamex is a no no, acrylic is the best bet but is expensive.

Anybody got any ideas, it will screw flat onto the wooden face of the counter, it has a flat surface.

    Size is 2930mm x 950mm

    Thanks

Why do you need an extra substrata? wood is a solid enough material, just prime properly and apply the graphics direct,

I wouldn’t rule out a Foamex type of material entirely. Coloured PVC foam boards have a much harder surface than white due to the pigments used in their manufacture.

Likewise a gloss PVC substrate (e.g Foamalux Ultra) has a very hard surface similar to Acrylic but is much cheaper

I’m putting a counter in my shop Warren. I’m using 6mm Foamex because of it’s ability to bend. (Shut it Phill before yer start!) 😉

I know Peter, I read Warrens post. 😉 Amari Plastics in Nottingham are using black foamex and they haven’t had any issues with it.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies, I just thought Foamex would also be prone to cracking if hit or kicked, it is a computer repair shop so lots of people coming in with bags and stuff so is prone to the odd knock and kick. I just want to make sure I fit something that will not break and make me look bad.

Although the surface is flat it has lots of channels in it, similar to the wall panels used to hook hanging display brackets on if you know what I mean and is a laminated wood covering and not solid wood. He wants it to have a smooth finish, he also wants 2 similar pieces on the wall behind him.

Do you think Foamex will be up to the challenge? otherwise I think the best option for the desk so far might be as Rob suggested 2mm Aluminium.

    Thanks guys

Amari plastics do a 3mm duobond, brushed alluminium finish, looks quality for receptions, if you show them a piece they will want it, everyone does. Show them a piece with their logo on in they will fall in love all over again and you will be cupid m8. trust me.

yes, we done 2-3 reception desks… we have used acyrlic bent around MDF a few times now… we also have made an exhibiton pod out of brushed dibond.
