  • what material can i use for a removable car window sign?

Posted by Michael Day on 22 September 2005 at 14:52

I have been wrestling with this one for a few days. My customer wants signs to fit into the rear side window of his estate car. He also wants to remove them when he isn’t using the car for business.

I have tried making panels out of polycarbonate (to flex into the window cavity), but to get them bendy (there must be a better word for that!) enough i end up using 2mm , which frankly cracks even if you look at it funny.

Can anybody suggest a suitable substrate ? I would even consider using a material similar to the plastic used on tax disk holders (if the vinyl will stay attached to it).

Any advise would be most gratefully received (please don’t bother with the "get out of the industry" posts !)

How about using suction cups and pvc?

That is one option that i have thought about…and it may well come to that.. the other option is self-cling vinyl, all i have to is find somebody who sells it

There are different types of suction cups but I don’t think its the answer.

The little 50mm diam ones with the thumb screw are too weak in our opinion, the pvc panel will come away (IE fall off) within a few hours

the larger one with the lever to apply suction, i feel they are too large & too heavy duty, if there is such a thing. They were last seen in a sixties spy film as the hero climbs up the side of a building, using them in a human fly fashion.

How about using a pvc panel with velcro on the hems, and self adhesive velcro attached to the frame? slightly stone-age but should do the job, and can be removed and be unobtrusive when the vehicle is in use.

BTW i’m not trying to flog suction cups, just making a point that we use them a lot 😀

    Cheers

    Jamie

    Hi Micheal
Had this situation once, the only answer I could find was to make some 3/5mm foamex panels and use the suckers (as on the baby on board signs) to stick them to the window, doesn’t look fantastic but the customer seemed happy.

    Regards

Getting conflicting views on the suction cups. Supplier saying they will fall off, others saying they work.

Not sure the customer will go for the velcro. Good lateral though though…very much appreciated.

We supply local taxi firms with telephone nos onto pvc then held with 12mm suction cups and have never had a problem with them falling off.
    Spandex supply self cling vinyl.

Will self-cling work if the window is a compound curve? Would you get creases?

I think suction cups are probably the answer, as long as they are not too small.

Suction cups seem to be the answer. Just left a message with the customer to get their view.

I might be calling you Jamie to get a price ?

Many thanks to everybody for their help on this. I hope I can be of use to you guys some time

    Kindest Regards

There’s a material called “penstick” which is the same as the material that tax disc holders are made from (i.e clear flexible self cling plastic). You can buy this from Europoint display. This will do what you have described 😀

again, many thanks to you all for your help on this one. i have talked to the customer and suction cups are OK with him. Thanks for the tip on Penstick, I am sure I will need it sooner rather than later. Anybody recommend a supplier of suction cups ? :lol1:

re self cling, i wonder how many times it could be re-used, if the guy were to take it off everyday for example, i can’t imagine it lasting very long,

i think i’d go with the velcro idea, maybe incorporate a dark colour border or areas for the velcro to stick to, so it is unobtrusive on the sign, four or even eight small 25mm velcro circles will barely show thru the glass, think black vinyl behind glass…. none to visible !

    imho !
