  • what locators & adhesive ?

Posted by signdevil on 1 March 2004 at 12:30

We have a job on at present which requires routed aluminium lettering mounted off an external wall. Although we’ve done this many times in the past, I am not sure that we are using the correct locators and adhesive for this material.

Anybody got a number for a supplier for the the kind of locator and adhesive we should be using for aluminium lettering (?)

I would use a brass locator like the ones in the picture at the start of my demo on the flat cut acrylic but with no male thread stud on the top. You can get these in various sizes from http://www.fkmoore.co.uk/ as far as adhesive goes I don’t know for aluminium, but you could speak to Steve at NIS on 0191 469 8409 – they do a lot of this sort of lettering.
I would be interested to know what the recommended adhesive is for this myself if you find out !!

Although I can’t suggest a adhesive, I believe brass locators are one of the most common, we use them on our stainless flatcuts all the time without any problems.

if allumnium flat cut letters then i use a 3M adhesive. unless the letters are very big i will still use plastic male and female locators using the 3M glue to adhere to the aluminium.
i have been using this glue for about 3 years now. maybe more! never had one letter fall. (touch wood) 😉
the downside of plastic loactors is the life of them. after a few years they become very brittle which doesnt help
some may think plastic loactors should only be used on plastic letters. not the case! a 1 metre high 5mm perspex circle is heavier than an 2mm alluminium one. as long as the proper glue is used there is no real difference that i have come across.

to see how to apply this adhesive check my demo in the demo section.

(just my opinion of course 😉 )

I don’t suppose you know the product code for the 3M stuff do you Rob? I’ve got a job in the next couple of weeks that requires glueing plastic locators to a dibond sign. (?)

I second that. Rob do you have the reference for this adhesive and does anybody know of a distributor for 3M products in the Manchester / North West area ?
