  • What is this material called

Posted by Angelique Muller on 16 July 2007 at 19:39

Sorry, new to the business and not quite familiar with names of materials etc…
What is this white board called that looks a bit like mdf, 12 mm thick, but made out of plastic (or styrene).
Secondly: where can I get it (in Ireland?)

    Thanks

    Thanks Harry,
Do they cut to size? And any idea of price per sq.metre or sheet?

Do you use this material yourself?
It’s just that I got a sample of it the other day from a builder. It looks like it would just suit the job that I have to do…
Or would you have another alternative material: it is for a b&b sign and is hanging of a metal frame. It will have writing on both sides….
I liked it cause it has that thickness and weight to it….(so it doesn’t flap around in the wind too much…I thought)

I just googled both names and it ooks like both names are brandnames, same product though…..
If you want to paint it (gloss finish), would it require undercoat, or would just a topcoat be okay?

i sometimes buy it in pretty thick, even at 19mm and it comes with a semi gloss finish on it as standard. the thinner stuff doesnt have as good a finish but still more than acceptable.

Does it come in different colours then? I was told you could only get it in white….. I need a bit of magnolia so I thought I just paint it…. but if I can get it in that colour that would be even easier……

Foamex is the same Angelique, dont have the pricelist to hand, will let you know in the morning.
I have painted it, but you have to key it really well and give plenty of time to cure. It does take a colour wash really well and I normally floodcoat.
Don’t think they cut it to size, but not sure as i only order full sheets, its easy to cut with a knife and a straight edge though.
speak to Brian in O’sullivan’s he’s very helpful.

you could also try these guys, delivery time is not as good though.

I thought the stuff only came in white and I need the sign to be off-white/magnolia. I don’t have that colour vinyl, but I do have the right colour paint……

that is a fair answer but it dont like having paint on it unless its very well prepared.

    Is it anything like these?
    Komatex
    http://www.kommerlingusa.com/komatex/index.htm#
    (I always call it Komatose)
    Sintra
    http://www.alcancompositesusa.com/produ … UAodjg9nvw
    Both are PVC.
I don’t like to use them because they can shatter in extreme cold or warp in the heat.
I did have to make a small PVC sign last week, for a 4×8 sheet of beige it was only 20 bux.
    Love….Jill

    Hi Angelique,
I paint foamex all the time, I use a product called eurogen available in all bs colours, its a brushable 2 pack with a pot life of an hour or so, it "bites" into the pvc, costs about 25 euro per litre, use a small foam roller and chuck it when you are finished!
