  • what is the Law regarding vinyl numbers on cars?

Posted by Richard Peirce on 12 April 2007 at 11:02

Can anyone guide me on this please. I’ve been asked, and need to know myself, if numbers are allowed on cars for a rally event that goes across Europe, are they legal/permitted, or where can I find out?

Ive never seen an official or unofficial come to that, rally event without the cars being numbered, How else would they be able to check timing and positions?

It depends on who is organising the event as to what format and size the numbers are though, sponsors quite often supply the roundels and numbers

i’ve been asked to supply the numbers and names, and event decals, but wanted to check if they’d be legal or not before supplying them and getting in trouble.

    Hi Richard,
I recently contacted an official at my local County Constabulary (Norfolk) and was told that ‘There is no legislation regarding this’, it might be worth you doing the same in your area for peace of mind.

Richard, I would contact the organisers of the event if I were you, I do a bit of stuff for stock cars and the numbers have to be certain sizes and colours. The organisers of the event should be able to give you any specific details about number sizes and colours.

Thanks but the problem is that they won’t be in this area. The rally starts in london, then to holland, germany, czech republic, austria, italy and france!

And Martin, cheers but I don’t need number sizes and colours, I’ve already worked that out, its just the laws i’m enquring about.

you shouldn’t get into trouble anyway. You are just supplying and/or fitting a product that has been requested by your client. You can not be held responsible for doing what you are paid for in this instance.

The onus for legality is on the organisers. Based on your thought, the people supplying the tyres would be responsible for any tyre that does not meet legal requirements in any of the countries they race in. In truth, if the organisers request a certain tyre, it is their responsibility to make sure it is legal on the course. The same gose with advertising and signage.

This is really the Rally organisers responsibility and you should make them aware of this if you are asked to install them.
If this is supply only, do not mention in your quotation, ‘Rally’ numbers ‘Car door’ blanks, roundels etc, then all you have supplied is a set of numbers on backgrounds to a specified size and not for a particular use.

Not sure there is any restrictions.
If you think about it another way what about all the printed vinyl wraps that get put on cars etc, they never have a problem in most European countries.

I think the only restriction is on confusing number plates and lights etc, and you can’t restrict the view through front windows.

I agree with stephen, you only have to be carefull of impeding the correct operation of the vehicle and of the law being able to identify the identification of the vehicle.
If there were any laws against anything else there would be no RAC Rally every year.
Martin has a good point too but also international events must have an international governing body as well, wouldnt they?

I have done 2 porches for the cannon ball run in the past, never any questions of legislation regarding numbers, even though the event is verging on illegal 😀

No Problem Richard, hope you got it all sorted, I just mentioned the organisers because they should know the legality of it and also with stock car racing the numbers have to be a certain size and colour on a certain colour background with a minimum and maximum stroke thickness and if they aren’t then the guys don’t race, its as simple as that. A lot of the drivers don’t know this and I get asked to do them in different colours and sizes so I have to keep pointing out to people that they won’t be able to race if they are done how they want.

ive been browsing these boards a while and heres my first post!!! 😀
being a rally competitior my self the only thing stated in the regs regarding numbers is that all numbers , identification etc must be removed on completion or retirement from an event .
on stage rallies cars have to carry numbers , identification etc and also use the public highway to get to the stages
    hope that helps

nice Porche you did there Peter 🙂
thanks for your posts guys, I emailed local constabulary and they said as long as there’s nothing offensive then should be fine. With regards to laws in different countries, this is something I can’t find on the internet, but as Andrew said there must be an international governing body that’s aware of any.

Well orders are coming in now for them so hope it all goes well. Have to fit these and organisers/sponsors logos to approx 35 cars in 1 day soon so wish me luck 🙂

hi shane maty …ralley escort …well thats a ford escort . they were winning everything in ralleys in the seventies long before the four wheel drive (audi especially ) came on the scene . I used to go to the rallys in the mid eightys when the group B cars were in full swing ……550 break qautros ….pug 205s …rs 200s…a very exciting time ….sadly group b cars were banned …eh think it was after an rs 200 went into some spectators in greece ..eh i think but im sure some ralley buffs will correct me ….hannu mikola was my hero in these days ….followed by mechelle mouton (bet ive spelt them wrong)…michelle was far prettier to look at 😀 😀

The RS2000, was a great car in its day…. Did a Ford Escort hill climb car a while back. Won everything he entered. Spent a fortune on it I remember, not much different from when the Escorts were common place really :lol1:

i know this is a little off topic, but seeing the title made me remember it…

some time ago, a pal and i were discussing my MX5, saying how stupid it was to make a nice roundy front, and then stick a big square No plate thing on the front, so i decided that at some point, i’ll replace it with a sticky one,

after a few beers, this sticky number plate quickly developed into a flood coated / wrapped yellow reflective car, with a giant wordsearch on it, with only the number plate numbers being surrounded with a black line,

i guess you had to be there, but we were near wetting ourlesves while thinking up all the naughty words we could fit into the wordsearch, just for the speed camera assistants you understand ! could just imagine their surprise at having a whole car glow up in the flash ! shame the MX is too curvy to wrap with reflective !
