  • what is the difference between the summa d60 & FX?

Posted by Chris Theakstone on 23 November 2006 at 19:20

Looking at finally changing my Pcut (had really good use out of it) for something like the Summa D60. I am a little confused about the difference between the D60 FX (opus eye) and the D60. I presume one has an "optical eye", what advantage or disadvantage is this ?
I am not looking for speed just accuracy up to 4 metres and looking to spend around the £1000 to £1500.

    many thanks Chris

The ‘eye’ facility is for registering up a printed piece of vinyl for profile cutting. eg. you get a couple of metres worth of stickers printed but not cut to size, or an image that requires profiling.

by lining up key areas (registration points) you can practically ‘die-cut’ or ‘profile cut’ a design through your software.

I use a Summa D120, but didn’t have any need for the opical eye so didn’t bother.

I think the FX is possibly a more ‘entry level’ spec due to the price difference – but I’m not actually sure.

by the way – VICTORY have been doing some fantastic deals on Summas recently – check their special offers page…

We have used a D60 with opus for about 18 months now. You will only need the opus if you intend to print and cut and if you do you will find it very accurate and reliable but there is a learning curve. We also run a Mutoh SC650 which is similar money but in my view probably a better machine. Tracking on the summa is not as good as mutoh unless you load the rolls of media onto the spool carriers which is a real pain if you change vinyls a lot. Also the summa only has a rear sensor for the vinyl so the front origin is set at wherever you load the media. If you forget to roll back after loading and hit enter you will waste the front 6" or so on each cut. The mutoh also has a sheet off facility which we use all the time to great effect for repeat jobs. Our mutoh is just beginning to "splutter" after 10 years of heavy use and when it dies I won’t hesitate in replacing with another.
