  • what is the correct way to fix banner onto wall?

I’ve seen a thread along similar lines to this, but I want to double check and make sure I’m going on the right track.

I want to attach a banner to a wall. Previously I’ve employed a fitter to put up signs for me, but I’m being brave 🙄 :lol1: Obviously I’m going to sink a wall plug into the wall, but the screw head is considerably smaller than the eyelet, so a washer is needed. All pretty straight forward, but my question is what type of washer? Plastic? Metal? If its metal, what type of metal? etc etc

I know this may seem obvious and easy to most, but I want to get this right so I figured I’d ask for the benefit of your experience rather than trying to learn this by trial and error.

If it makes any difference, the banner size I’m putting up is 6ft x 6ft, 650gsm heavy duty PVC coated polyester fabric with brass eyelets. 😮 Phew, thats a bit of a mouthful considering its just a banner! 🙄 😮

    Cheers, Dewi

Hi Dewi, I seem to remember someone using rubber tap washers under steel washers for doing this type of thing. Not sure why you would use rubber washers, (it may be that the rubber bit sits inside the brass eyelet stopping the banner pulling to the screw, if you see what I mean) think I would use the ‘penny’ washers you get for rivets, they are really big with a very small hole.
    Hope this helps.

Dave is right about the rubber washers – I would use them under the steel washers so the steel isn’t against the banner material (just in case it tears).

You could also use a rubber washer behind the banner if you want to be over-cautious.

    Cheers

We always use “Penny Washers” from builders merchants or Baps for Bolts. no need for rubber washers as the penny’s don’t touch the banner material, only the brass eyelet.
Banners are supposed to be a temp sign but i have a few that customers around town have left up as fascia’s for 3-4 years now. these use the penny system with no probs so far.

i agree both ways will work…
rubber washer below metal one or plain metal one….
if its a metal one and you put through centre of eyelet you shouldn’t have any hassle…
basically what you are trying to achieve is to spread the area of the fixing to prevent it tearing. i have even seen folk using approx 2 inch squares of plywood screwed right thru… looks crap but does hold it and like has been said a banner is supposed to be short term…
in the past we have cut metal discs with 5mm holes in them to fix to stone walls, works a treat…
