What I did at the weekend
Posted by David Rogers on August 5, 2007 at 8:23 pmre-homed a dog….
Sonny (will be getting called Buddy as he doesn’t really respond to his name) is about 8 or 9. A collie / beagle cross best we can make out.
His owner was getting on in years and I spotted the ad in the pet shop window…saw him one day…got him home the next.
He was VERY stressed and clung into me for ages shaking with such a sad and pathetic almost silent "meeeeep meeeep" …like they do when a bit sad & wanting. Took him for a walk and it’s just building up the bond – even played with his ball for a bit when we got back in.
We did get him mainly for my wife…as he was a lady’s dog previously…but I dunno – maybe ‘cos I’ve had / been around collies all my life I ‘get him’.
At the moment he’s curled up on his bed next to me giving me big ol’ puppy-dog eyes…OK he’s just wandered off as he’s heard Manda making popcorn.
Other news…the local bird population decided to visit us today. As we feed the birds at the the front window on hanging feeders and we’ve nearly always got it just open an inch or two – in popped a bluetit for a hop along the window sill then after getting that out, 10 minutes later a sparrow comes in.
Will post a picture later of the little guy as he’s a bit camera shy right now.

😀 that’s nice Dave!!!!!
I’m sure you and Manda will give him a happy home! -
Good one Dave, hopefully he will settle in to his new home quickly and I am sure he will have a long and happy life.

Good on you Dave. Collies and Beagles are both intelligent dogs. He’ll work out in no time that he has landed on his feet in your home.
Well done,
For the record, I wander into the kitchen when I hear popcorn too… 😳

Well done Dave and Manda, it’s always sad when dogs have to be rehomed, must have been awful for his previous owner, but at least he didn’t go through the stress of kennels first. We have had several rescue dogs, currently have 4, none of them rescue though. Macey, our Weimeraner comes to work with me now, and it’s really nice. Hate leaving the others behind though.

Just to add a wee bit:
Figured out why he doesn’t ‘know’ his name or respond to ANY verbal commands…he’s a bit deaf!
Poor little guy went through a lot last night. VERY stressed at the upheaval – so panting, pacing…and pooping a lot. He seems a little more settled today.
If fact…I’m probably as stressed as I hate seeing him like that. Sad & a bit mushy I know – but I’m a big sap when it comes to animals! 😳

Best thing you can do Dave is to ignore him when he frets. If you pat him saying ‘there there’ that just reinforces that there is something to worry about. It’s the exact opposite from what you would do with a child. What you need to show is a confident calm leadership ………… this will reassure the dog if he knows you are in control. Basic pack order 😀
You will be able to teach the dog to react to hand signals if he’s a bit deaf ……. poor wee guy. 🙁 But he’ll do fine! 😉

You could also try a DAP diffuser, available from vets or on-line. It’s a stress-buster for dogs, used during times such as this, or during fire-works etc.

Shut up Graham ,You’ve always got something to say. When we wont to speak to you ,We will rattle your chain. 😮

Graham you dog is lovely, I always thought Chinese crested were bald with a tuft of hair on their head !!

Your are half right,Chinese crested are hair-less with a little hair on head and there legs and tail, But they come with hair all over and are called Chinese crested powder puff, which is long hair all over but Beau gets extremely mattered his hair is so fine, so we keep it short during summer and let it grow during winter. The other day I was painting the top of a box trailer and I sat a paint pot on the top of it for a minute next thing we heard a slide and splat, yes the paint pot hit the ground and straight across Beaus back, thank god it was not his head, because it was oil base paint, I had to cut off all the hair. Not to mention my wife’s jeans shirt etc got a good dose of paint, it was a real mess.

How does that work?
Would it work as a tranquilizer for mad/manic dogs? only kidding….. my two bordercollies just have an incredible amount of energy and I sometimes wish I could give them something to calm them down. They get a good long run on the beach almost every day, but when the weather is bad, or i am really tired and skip the walk they drive me nuts… Its my own fault: I should have read up on the breed before I got them…but I love them to bits! Actually I should thank them: at least I walk every day….without them I might be completely unfit…… -
Well done Dave, hope Buddy is settling in now.
Graham Beau looks gorgeous. I used to have an enormous French Lop rabbit called Beau, who was quite at home lying on the sofa watching tv!
Angelique, I too have a Border Collie – the most intelligent dog I’ve ever known. We’re lucky enough to have a few acres for her to play in and she does so quite happily on her own without straying the boundaries. Every so often she pops indoors to remind me she’s there and If I pass the door a ball comes flying my way, can’t get away with not throwing it if you are near the garden. She has plenty of exercise playing ball and frisbee but would keep going all day if we let her.
My friend has just saved another litter – or rather the pups mum has saved them by giving birth to them in my friends barn rather than on the farm she works and lives at. I am tempted…

I’ve got a ridgeback X who has a ton of energy. She gets so excited we do have to drug her when we have visitors. I hate doing it, but the Vet reckons she should start maturing at about 4 years old (she’s 3 now) so its something we can look forward too.
We took her to dog obedience, and we were told not to come back. Must be a 1st being expelled from doggy school 😳

nice one Dave ….dont get me started about my mut id be here all day ….bought her from PADS nine years ago wouldn’t be without her …the best fifty quid i ever paid …..an ex cruelly treated sheep dog ….and now a totall spoilt lump.
