  • What % discount do you give to large customers with bulk orders?

Posted by Martyn on 27 June 2018 at 13:07

Hi everyone. i never really give discounts because none of my customers place bulk orders as such. However having recently joined the RT, i have made a contact that owns a huge building company. Ive had quote requests in the past but have never got the jobs. Last month he said he would give us a go, i gave a slight discount and got the job to do a large van.

Now ive had a quote request for a large order. i know if i price it normally i wont get it. So whats a fair amount? i know its going to be competitive but also know not to be a busy fool.

This order is for- 30 off 3m by 1m banners
    60 off 1m by 500mm site boards

ive looked at perhaps 25% but it could be upto 50%.

Obviously a difficult one to answer but how do you guys work it.

    thanks

I offer 10% to client who give me 2 vehicles.
    15% to a good client.
25% discount to a good friend. (Friend must find another quote for me to beat 25%)
As one band I think optimization is the key.
If you are super busy why work at 50% discount?

On larger job’s I find the time becomes more of an issue than material costs.

30 3x1m banners, the material costs aren’t huge, but there’s some time required to trim & finish each one.

Whilst your machine is printing 1 roll of banner you can’t be printing anything else (that could be more profitable).

Finishing is going to consume some time, and if you’re doing it too cheap you could be better off doing 1 job and making more money than the 30 banners.

You should know how much you need to make an hour to pay the bills, work out your material costs, how long you think it’ll take to produce, and see what your cost is. Decide how much you want to make on the job, and divide it by the qty of banners. If the unit price sounds too cheap, chuck a bit more on. You can view it as making £xxx for X hours work.

I hate doing large repetitive jobs like that, so I always add a little extra on, to cover my boredom 😆

I usually give 20-30% discount to friends, family and charity. Some charity stuff if small i dont charge. As for cutomers i rarely give discount, and never really have it asked for. I must be far to cheap to begin with. Dont look at % just price the job as normal and round it down to a figure YOU like. Give him both prices so he can see hes getting it for less. Dont be a busy fool, the suns shinning and much better things to do with your time

I would outsource the work to a trade supplier like venture, leaves you free to carry on with other jobs, whilst the supplier has larger printers and faster finishing the turn around would be quicker

In the end i went with a 25% discount and i got the job. Only time will tell if it was the right decision, like most jobs, piss and moan whilst doing it but once its finished and invoiced the world seems a better place.

Ive estimated 5 solid days work so i will know by the end where i stand. thanks
