  • what can i do with oracal grey paint mask?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 16 October 2007 at 08:58

I have to supply text for a customer using the grey mask. I’ve never used it before, and need to know how to apply it.
Several questions, probably glaringly obvious, but there you go!

1: do I weed before taping, or should customer weed once in place?
2: Is it OK to weed & tape?
3: How long should they leave mask on for once painted?
4: Is it possible to do 2 coats?
5: what paint should they use?

    Sorry for the numpty questions….

    😳 😳 😳

not numpty questions at all Lorraine..

It’s like who wants to be a millionaire…the questions are only easy if you know the answers……thats why it’s good to be able to "phone a friend" on here 😀

Sorry…I don’t know the answers either but I would be keen to find out

Lorraine, I would opt for Mactac Grey mask but is up to you, use pretty much as normal vinyl.

    1. Weed before taping
    2. Yes
    3. I’d say no longer than 4 hours
    4. It is possible to do 2 coats. What paint are they using and how are they applying?
    5. What paint do they want to use?

I use this all the time for trailer curtain sides and I use screen ink and never have any issues.

    Hi Lorraine

What sort of paint are you using?

As a general rule – wait till its dry

Also make sure you use the correct one for the job (810 for most or 810S for solvent paints – exception is use 810 for 2K base coats as 810S wont stick)

Cut, Weed and tape just like ordinary vinyl

We use heaps – 810 on curtain siders for ink (doing a 40 footer today/tomorrow) and on a couple of corporate customers who insist on their logo and background pattern being plastered all over their vehicles used in the forest – vinyl doesn’t cut the mustard and they get dinged so often that its cheaper to do the repairs in paint and forget the vinyl.

Now and again have the odd edge lift on signboard when it wasn’t scotched properly

Hi guys thanks for the replies.
    I’m using Oracal because that’s what I ordered-in a full roll!
I don’t know what paint they will be using-I guess that Dulux gloss won’t be the best choice?! 😛
I thought that the mask should be lifted before the paint dries? Does the paint not crack if lifted too late?

If they’re using paint I’d remove before it’s dry.

yes it does lorraine, but i use cellulose paint which dries very quick, so i can apply two coats then take the mask off when its a bit tacky… practise on a spare bit material until you feel comfortable with the paint 😀
