  • what are your views on Vehicle outlines please?

Posted by Philip Houston on June 7, 2010 at 3:42 pm

    Hi Guys!

I mostly take photos of the vehicles I’m to apply graphics on. But sometimes I thing the vehicle outlines as a promotional tool may look better.

What’s your view on the subject?

Who has the best, most accurate, layouts?
I’ve a 2001 disc from Impact sign services. Maybe time to upgrade!!

Your advice is once again very welcome.
    Philip

iv used impact outlines since 2006 very good never had problems with them and for the price you carnt go wrong especially if you do a lot of vehicles.

    Impact every time,
but they do have a disclaimer, as per accuracy,
I have found that the later models are more or less spot on,
some of the earlier outlines are quite a bit out,
So you do need to double check with the actual vehicle,

A complete waste of money in my books. All the ones I have used are so inaccurate I now just take a photo and you know you have the correct model and more importantly the correct size.(as long as you can use a rule properly)

I used to use them but I always found there was a slight difference in where a badge was etc. I find a picture is simple handy and free! They are more professional looking when producing proofs, in my opinion!

Impact everytime. As Peter says – newer models seems more accurate but badge position can catch you out. Great for basic customer approval but you can’t beat measuring. Once you have your own ‘data base’ of measurements vehicle outlines come into their own.

Impact all the way, gosh if I have to take a photo of each vehicle and measure it I would be broke. The outlines are used here daily right up to the latest vans, my customers always comment on how well the layout looks when used with the correct template. Out of all the vans I have done I have not had any problems with sizes as most designs allow for negative space and this is allowed for with in a panel, as for badges well this comes from working on many vans and knowing there could be a badge on the rear !!!

I actually think we are biased for two reasons

1: Most of us have not had time to look at the competition and what Impact do is pretty much all we want.
2: Brian a member of the boards and gives good support!

So, its Impact for those reasons lol 😀

no its not dave… him and paul bought me drinks at signuk! :lol1:

seriously though, give us an example of Impacts competition and we can duscuss it, if we are biased.

also, have a look at the Impact survey we did some time ago… CLICK HERE

I’ve only ever come across 1 other company advertising vehicle outlines & their advert was so bad I could have done better with crayon, so I’ve never bothered looking elsewhere.

    If it aint broke…

that survey will be biased… i dont have time to look at other outlines as i said… however rumour mill is that there is a number on the Corel CD’s but I just dont have time… so impact wins

    Nice to be busy Dave,
Why do you say we are biased and recomend the same collection?
yes there are vehicle outlines on corel, I am only up to x3, but they are very US orientated, cant say what is on x5/ but surely as a corel guru/user you cant be to busy to browse the clip art collection that comes with corel?

Impact is good but I think they could improve by giving better descriptions
of each of the vehicles they have. There are so many slight variations on a lot of models from the same manufacturers that if they just named the exact model instead of just lWB /Swb /SWBCab etc.it would help massively. A lot of the time we are going in blind thinking we have the right vehicle only to find it is slightly different to the make and model we have taken note of. The whole thing would be a lot better if Impact put more time into properly naming the vehicles they show. As for there service they have got that spot on, great response time and most helpful

We’ve used Fastcars (Aussie based outlines) for years and only recently bought Impact’s set. I was really impressed with Impact. The only thing I can see to improve their outlines is the addition of a scale grid to the bottom of each file. Fastcars do this and it makes scaling (and checking scale is correct) a doddle.

We use impact, it’s a total no brainer!
For 1 I don’t have time to photograph, download, scale, pictures for every vehicle we do.
I don’t want to go and see every vehicle we do, it’s just not worth it, customers don’t want to come and see us to get a vehicle measured and then come back to get it done. It takes a quick phone call ‘I’ve got a new swb transit, solid back doors blah blah blah…’ and we can produce the layout.
Also the layouts look far better on the vehicle outline (in my opinion) and you get used to variations in the badges location.

I`d be lost without Impact`s Library.

I agree there are some outrageously wrong sizes in the older files (Volvo Tractor Units spring to mind). The scania outlines are also acceptable but not quite correct in terms of the Air deflectors. But the newer ones are very accurate so much so i confidently cut out kits without double checking on the vehicle.

Three cheers for Brian, however i`ll be giving you a dead leg if i come across any inaccuracies on these newer files.

Ahem, please remember as much as the vehicle template you are using, your vinyl cutter has accuracy tolerances too and dare I say it the operator.

I will say the Impact CD is the best one I have come across for sale in the UK.

the ones that are saying they tried something else are good valuable reviews here, for people like me who have only used Impact maybe missing out on "ultimate" vehicle outlines package, if one exists as we maybe blinded that Impact are the only ones there.

So thats why I shouted ‘biased’ as I have yet to try or hear much about the competition and I also fear that no-one here would write a review about it either! lol

Dave, not being funny mate, but who’s is Impacts competition in the UK?
Ingram, Mr Clip-art, (or are they same? lol) & Corel…

from what i have read of peoples views over the years on the boards is that Impacts are the most accurate of the bunch. Impact focus mainly on UK vehicles, where the others have mixed, with many being useless to us in the UK.
Disks are easily updated by phone/email and customer service is very good.
I am unsure the price comparison, but lets face it, at under £100 per year for something that saves us so much time and money its hardly worth niggling over pence.

if i am wrong then by all means shoot me down and put me straight. but if you dont know of any yourself, its a bit of a pointless argument is it not mate? 😀

I see your point Dave and agree to an extent. We use impact but have used others in the past. I prefer impact to others I’ve tried but don’t know for sure that they are the ‘best’. One thing is certain though, you do not want bad outlines and I’m happy with the tolerance of the impact software (tractor units being one area that I’m always weary of).

I’ve always found the customer service fine but not out of this world. Nothing to complain about but a few missed emails here and there, like I say nothing to get upset over but seen as most people applaud them on customer service I’d like to point out that that is not true for everybody.

We use Impact but also have a german one called Car Art which has all the dimensions of various panels, door handles and bonnets etc. which is very useful when doing wrap prints.
