what are peoples opinons on the Roland CX24 please?
Posted by Oz.VinylStore on 21 February 2004 at 20:09Hi guys n gals – we are looking at a new cutter and can probably stretch to around £1500.
Is the CX24 a well built machine and hence worth the money or should we look at something else?
Many thanks 🙂

Ive owned a CX24 for just over a year now and had no problems. Been using Roland cutters for the last 6 years and again never had any problems.

If I had £1500 I would look at the Graphtec CE 3000-60 @ £1495+vat

We have recently bought a suma D60. No problems …£1400 + VAT
We Had a Graphtec FC2000 For 8 years but was told that the newer equivalent 24″ model was not of the same build quality and you need the bigger one for the same robustness as the older type. -
Hi Marty
I think you will find this is the case with most vinyl cutting machines these days.
The brains behind the machine are the same, just the casing that has changed some.
I have a pretty old 24” Roland cutter, comes in a metal case structure with heavy duty clamps/pinches that would snap the fingers from you.
When I looked at the newer models amongst many other makes they all seemed so “plastic” in comparison to what I had. I think the basic reason is to lower the cost of manufacturing these machines to compete better on the market. E.g. replace metal with plastics.
Again, I also had the old spandex 4b. That was like steel shoebox along with and came with an apple comp it cost about £25grand in its prime & it was only 13 inch wide. Times move on and Cutbacks are made to compete on the ever-increasing cutter market. The equivalent to that these days are again in plastic.
If you want, say a metal-bodied machine, then yes the larger models like the Graphtec are in metal. But not all of it. The structure is metal and the gantry is metal but the ends and some other parts plastic. I would have thought the gantry casing far to flimsy in plastic if it stretched 54 inches so it’s in metal. So I think this is probably the real reason the larger machines tend to be in metal and the smaller in plastic.
I have 3 Roland cutters and changed to Graphtec for various reasons. I have heard glowing reports across the country about their machines and their service.
Roland on the other hand, had terrible after sales service & costly parts to replace.
So I started to look elsewhere when it came to our 4th cutter even though I couldn’t grumble at the performance of the Roland cutters.
In the end I went for the Graphtec 54inch cutter. We have had it a few years now and I can honestly say I have never had a problem with it. I think the only thing we have replaced is the cutting nylon strip and lets face it we change that on any cutter.
I have heard a few folk here on the site mention how well they regard their summa cutters so I cant fault them from the word of mouth eather. I would try using the search engine at the top of the screen. See other discussions on cutters. Best of luck! 😉 -
I think you will find the Summa D60 is not as well built as the Summa T610 of the past Marty, so to compare your old 2100-50 with the 3100-60 is a little unfair. The fact that it’s not built like a tank doesn’t mean it won’t do just as good a job.

Sorry guys but was just going by what I was told.
We had no problems at all with the graphtec untill recently ( 8 years running six days a week nearly all day) . So when we decided to get a new one several dealers told me that the newer 24″ Graphtec was not as well built as my older version and to get the same quality we needed to go for the wider model, but as we are short on room (the plotter and computers are locked away in a special built cupboard at night) We went
for the Suma. Don’t get me wrong as this is also Mostly plastic and does’nt look as sustantial as the old machine but everyone said at this size its the better bet.
Got no problems except its too fast, even slowed down
when it moves along the vinyl it shoots along much to fast and sometimes runs off or creases slightly. -
Hi,
I can’t say anything about other plotters as I have never used them.
I have owned a CX24 for 4-5 Years – and it is an excellent machine.
I have only ever changed the cutter strip – and the machine has paid itself off many times over. If I ever need to get another machine – it would be another Roland for sure!
Hope this helps!Clive
