Please can anyone let me know about the minimum height for letters on a sign, so that visually impaired people can read it. I have a 6′ x 4′ sign to site on a railway station and have struggled to get the customer to finalise everything and now he’s said that it all has to be able to be read for visually impaired people. ( this sign has been in the design stage for 5 months already! Just one last hurdle and I can see the end in sight )
    Thanks in advance 😀

Never mind the visually impaired, what about the iliterate or Gaelic speakers. Surely they have as much right to extra consideration to accomodate their specialist requirements 😉

I have rummaged through my files and folders and found something which was sent to me ages ago from RNIB Wales which says that the minimum height for printed type ( Books etc ) is 16pt, but I dont know if this applies to signage or not. I would be interested to know if anyone else has done anything for the Visually impaired. I hope they dont go all politically correct on me and ask for Braille!

    I`d google it JEM.

I`d be looking for .gov websites or charity aid websites for that kind of information. Pretty sure it wouldn`t take long to find.

Good suggestion, Rod, I did that and the Department for TRansport website had guidelines as follows

Long distance reading such as Building Entrances…….150mm min
Medium distance such as direction signs in corridors……50-100mm min
Close up reading such as wall mounted info signs……..15-25mm min

    So problem solved
    Cheers! 😀
