Vinyl that "peels" / re-usable
Posted by Frank_Galloway on 26 November 2007 at 10:51hi..
I have an existing customer that would like some festive designs for his shop front windows.
Does anyone know the name or a supplier that sells the "clingy" vinyl… not really sure what it’s called but basically the same stuff i guess as car tax holders are made of.
any help / info would be appreciated.. I’ve been on my usual suppliers website but can;t see anything suitable..
thought I’d ask here first before i start ringing around the houses without a brand name to even go on !
hopefully someone can point me in the right direction 😕
oh – and also I’m guessing it’s just trial and error on the Plotter settings to cut such media ? – only used regular "adhesived" vinyl you see.
thanks

Frank, Hexis and grafityp both do cling for printing, it only comes in white and clear as far as I know.

ah right – so this material is only "printable" – i mean you couldn’t buy white just for "snowflakes" and cut them … you’d need to "print" white snowflakes on the clear film to get that effect ?..

id see if you could get a sample to cut before id go buying a load.

Ah cool !…
ok then – how about if you don;t have the equipment to "print" could you possibly use cut vinyl onto the white or clear "cling" – or does the cling start to ruffle up when the adhesive on the regular vinyl starts to set ?
just thinking out of teh box here seeing as i don;t have ‘print’ facilities

you can have a large bit of clear and apply normal cut stuff in reverse then apply to window inside in one go.
this allows you lots of colours with out printing.chris

Applying colours onto clear is probably the best way to go as cutting anything intricate in cling is a bit of nightmare! (if not imposssible!)

Frank, could be a good time to start using the services of a trade printer.
It’s got to happen sometime. -
I suggested getting some to sample because the first thing I thought like you said, could the material start ruffling up during cutting?
In my experience, if you are going to go down the route of applying normal calendered vinyl to self cling to put on a window, Id be careful if you are going to get a lot of heat from sign light, radiators under the window etc…both materials expand and contract at different rates an have a habit of crumpling up, looking unsightly and at the worst, falling off and being unusable, I know from bitter experience after doing loads of these for a car dealership who put them in his car windscreens…didnt even last a week.
Id just do the snowflakes in normal white removable vinyl

Cherylah-ha ! – is there such a thing ?.. have you got a link ?… looks like what I’m after in a nutshell !

Just ask any supplier for semi-permanent (short life) vinyl.
I’ve done a fair bit of short term window graphics and the semi perm just peels off dead easy. Of course it is not re-useable!

HEXIS REMOVABLE IS NOT REUSEABLE, UNLESS YOU WANT TO SCRUNCH IT UP AND LOB IT AT SOMEONE.
