  • Vinyl suitable for a RIB Rescue Boat?

Posted by Alex Parkin on 29 October 2015 at 12:16

    Hi

I have just had an enquiry for some vinyl letter to be fitted to a RIB rescue boat. The enquiry states

The lettering will need to survive:
    · inflation & deflation
    · salt water & freshwater conditions
    · general abuse

The letters will also need to be in Micro Prismastic/Reflective Yellow and not damage the material of the boat.

Has anyone any recommendation on material and ease or not of cutting.

    Thanks in advance

I would try Wm Smith for advice on this because it could be a 3M product.

alternatively, on an inflatable, i would only use ink stencilled on using a roller.
you will get the ink from Apollo Inks. cheap and easy done.

I’d second the stencil/ink as Rob says, but maybe check with the suppliers/manufacturers that the solvents won’t damage the rib material, just to be on the safe side.

I’ve used oracle 551 on ribs with no adverse affects, though they never deflated the tubes to be fair. reflective would never allow itself to wrinkle up when the tube is deflated, just wouldn’t happen. I have put it on the tubes by putting it onto clear 551 but again, it was never fully deflated.

I’ve not seen the guy in a couple of years so I can’t tell you if it’s still going strong, it’d managed a good 18 months up to the last time I saw it.

The ink idea sounds much better though!

    Thanks for the replies

Is the ink reflective, as its a rescue boat this seems to be a key requirement

    Thanks Kevin

When I asked the question I didn’t think it was going to be a straight forward answer

    Good link Kev. :thumbup2:

I know they state paint, but give no real details, i think they are using Ink. 😉 😀
Ive used inks on tons of banners, curtain sided trucks etc and i know its used on bouncy castles too.
Ive sprayed them and used rollers. but for this size of thing ide use a roller. quicker, easier and less hassle.

appears you can buy Reflective ink too!

This part still has me thinking it is a vinyl though:

    Hi Rob
no mate believe it is actually a rubberised / flexible paint which you can also get as a micro reflective product
