  • Vinyl removal from acrylic sheet – help please?

    Hi all,

    Little help needed…

We have an old freestanding lightbox (2 strip lights inside with two pieces of slightly curved translucent acrylic front and back that glow when switched on) that I’m trying to remove some printed vinyl so I can replace with new graphics.

Only thing is that because it’s about 3-4 years old the vinyl is REALLY stuck on and proving a nightmare to try and pull off the acrylic sheet. We’ve priced up a couple of new sheets of acrylic but they are way too expensive for his job.

Does anyone have any advice on how to remove vinyl from acrylic sheeting?

We thought about maybe using the blanket wash from our litho press, but we’re worried that will erode the acrylic.

Any help would be much appreciated 🙂

    Thanks in advance!

You shouldn’t have to much of a problem removing it if you have applied a bit of heat, if your not use to using a heat gun then try a hair dryer, you don’t need a lot of heat. To much & you will distort the acrylic anyway lol. Then use something like IPA or industrial meths to remove the glue residue.

People have reported having success removing graphics from vehicles by warming using a kettle full of boiling water but you obviously need a clear space for this because of the mess, not tried it myself but try searching the forum.

We warm it with a heat gun, and pull one corner to the middle, then the other corner to the middle, pulling the middle down, and repeat, down the long edge of the acrylic.

It’s murder on my hands, but get’s the job done.

    Thank you very much guys!

I’ve not used a heat gun before but desperately trying to get into Vehicle Graphics so this may be a good training exercise to get use to them.

Failing that, I’ll just use a hair dryer and see how I get on.

I’ve read that you can just use Bug and Tar remover for vehicles to clean off any remaining residue… should in theory do the same thing.

Will let you know how I get on.

Tar & glue remover will get rid of glue residue yes, just that it’s generally more expensive that IPA :lol1: :lol1:
