  • vinyl recommendation for van recesses?

Posted by Neill Hague on 20 October 2006 at 09:32

    Morning everyone

could I have some advice please on what vinyl to use do the large grey logo on this van, for all the other bits I will use Mactac 9800 series.

Do you think 9800 will be fine for the big logo or should I get a good cast vinyl in?

We use 9800 for the majority of our jobs but I am a bit unsure whether it will stay in the recesses on this van.

    thanks very much

    Neill

I haven’t used MacTac 9800 for some years and I have no doubt that it has improved, but I wouldn’t use it for this job. My weapon of choice would be Avery 900 series.

£11.77 a metre, is that good or do they need to get the calculator out again (?)

    Hmmmm.

What quantity is that for? Anything less than a full roll and I will need to have words with Cox Plastics.

We’re paying £11.43 per metre. And buying it by the barrowload. 👿

that was for 10 metres, of 961 (Pearl grey)
The list price from the Spandex brochure for a full roll is:

    Black/white – £10.99 metre
    Colours – £13.08 metre
    Metallics – £14.38 metre

    Hi Neill

Just a thought – its a grey logo on a white van, why not just cut round the recesses and don’t try to mould into them with heat. Yes you will see the about 5mm white on the inside edge of the recess but it will be hardly noticeable (grey/white), cheaper polymeric vinyl will suffice and you’ll get the job done quicker. Maybe give the customer the choice???

    Cheers

movana recess is quite gentle so consider macfleet, or mac 9800,
it will do the job, and a lot cheaper

as peter has said the recess on this van are not bad im sure 9800 would be fine i do these vans for vauxhall parts and have used 5 year printed and these go in and out of the recess and are fine

let us know what you go for

I know the Europoint prices have gone up slightly from what are shown on here for UKSB members but I would have thought you get get 751 oracal 1260 wide for not too much over £4 a metre.

Have used this all over the panels on movanos which have gentle recesses to deal with without too much bother (and that was last winter when outside when it was cold)

I use a lot of oracle 751, but find that the colour disipates and the shape shrinks when stretched into a recess. it could be OK using grey, but it is also(just my opinion) the bottom end of the scale for cast vinyl, but top end for normal use, I could list other pro’s and con’s,but for this particular job, I would avoid it.
Unless you use it on a regular basis, it is not very forgiving, so Mac or Avery?

I agree with you that the colour dissipates with 751 when stretched but the panels on the movano require so little stretching without any need for heating that this shouldn’t be a problem.

The job we did had a black stripe about 400mm deep that ran from just under the drip / water bar near the roof line down and ran around both sides and around the back doors. No app tape used just straight from a roll pre slit to the correct width.

thanks for the advice guys, very useful.
We have used Mac 9800 for many years & like it very much. I thought it would be good for a logo of this size but just wanted to see peoples thoughts.

We have slit around the recesses before like Macky suggested & may go for this again, as the grey is very pale.
Any way once the van is done I will put up a picture.

    cheers guys

I’m afraid that I can’t agree with my colleagues in this one.

The bit of the Transit rear door circled in the picture below is hardly severe but I have had calendered vinyl pull out of there on too many occasions.

Having said that, my view is coloured by the fact that when vans leave here they often wind up at the other end of the country and rectification costs are too expensive to take the risk. I accept that if it is a local van, that can be easily and cheaply be brought in for a bit of rectification if needed, then it might be worth the risk of using a cheaper vinyl. I would still be reluctant though.

I still stick by Avery 900, or any good cast.
