  • Vinyl Prints bubbling on the wall

Posted by David Hammond on 22 October 2013 at 08:56

We installed 6 logos (45mm diameter) a few weeks ago using a reputable branded vinyl (waterbased adhesive), we received the call that they had bubbled and started lifting.

We then re-printed the logos, using a solvent based adhesive vinyl, and within a week they too are bubbling and peeling.

This was part of a larger job and have installed vinyl lettering onto the wall with no issues, it’s these circles that are causing the issue.

We’ve no idea what is causing it?

Any ideas, or recommendations on something that isn’t going to start lifting??

PURELY guessing, maybe something coming up from the paint?

Any way you could just cut the logos in vinyl rather than print?

Printed WW300 won’t lift unless it is something to do with the paint.

I did suggest we used cut vinyl, but the customer wanted and exact match to the other bits we have been printed.

As the logo’s are in a recreation room, I can’t rule out vandalism… I’m thinking whether to mask and paint them on the wall!

Question is have you applied the same vinyl to other walls in the building? If you have are they showing the same problems> If not then the problem may not be down to the vinyl at all & any vinyl you put on that wall will have the same problem.

We’ve installed cut vinyl lettering (ritrama) to another wall in the same office. That’s stuck on a treat.

There’s something not right, our customer watched us install both times, and they’re equally as confused. 🙄

Blow over with a heat gun to suck and rub over with a soft cloth when it’s still soft to work it right into the paint…if that doesn’t stop it getting bubbles…nothing will.

Was the wall painted recently? Could be the paint is still outgassing, in which case it needs more time to dry before applying vinyl prints

Wall was painted 1month prior to us applying the logo’s, that’s the first question I asked.

Will try and bake them with a heat gun, should help somewhat.

I think it is the paint that causes the problem, what type of paint was used? on oil base or water?

Was the wall painted matte? lacquer? half matte?

Was wall painted soon after plastering? if so maybe the plaster is still drying out

If they are on an outside wall & there is any moisture coming through then baking them with a heat gun won’t do very much at all.
Have you put printed graphics on any other walls in the building at all. I can’t see it being a problem with the printed graphics the amount of stuff you must have done by now but you never know.

not ideal but it will solve the problem, apply to 2mm pvc white foam and no more nails it onto the wall. Probably not quoted for, but its a cheap material and will save you going back and back etc.
I use it here for wall stuff that is not flat enough or walls that have problems with damp coming through.

    Good luck
