Vinyl on light aircraft..
Posted by Hugh Potter on 11 April 2016 at 15:51Hi all,
have a rush job on a few small planes (Icarus C42 microlights), just need to do the upright tailplanes, it’s on a material called Ultralam – very much like re-inforced banner material.other than not going anywhere near it with a scalpel, is there anything I need to consider – vinyl wise?
regards,

Morning Hugh
I’ve done a few planes myself, and as long as the adhesive is high enough tack you should be fine.
Preparation is important so a solvent cleaner is recommended .ill post a picture shortly

Pretty much Ian, yes! except he wants the whole tail & rudder wrapped red… I said I’m not wrapping leading edges due to stitching and will just do near full panels each side, from a distance you’ll not really see the 1" borders!

Good thinking Hugh
Aircraft is not a common vehicle amongst most companies/installers so many would attempt it with standard vinyls and leading edges – and then watch as the plane undresses itself on its first flight lol
Keep us posted, would be good to see some pictures :thumbup2: -

Keep us posted, would be good to see some pictures :thumbup2:This is for a temporary thing – he’s going to an aircraft fair over the weekend with his three Icarus C42’s, they’re classed as microlights, solid hulls but pvc stype (Ultralam) wings and tail skins. He put some sponsor stickers I made him a year ago from oracle 551 (he didn’t tell me they were for aircraft) and they’ve done all summer in the UK, winter in Spain and many thousands of miles all over.. I tried to remove one.. no chance!
For this as it’s temprary and needs doing sharpish I’ll be using the 551 but fitting very carefully!! I mentioned the £m products available but time and budget…
What do you usually use? I ask as there’s likely to be more permanent work in future.

Yeah 551 is absolutely fine and what I use most of.
If money isn’t a factor and the installation is pemenant with partial wrap
Etc then I use either high tack Hexis ( ref escapes me ) or Arlon DPF 8000 series gloss white. Matt laminate DPF8000-02/3220M purchased from William smithThe Arlon product is more of a masonry vinyl so adhesive is aggressive but it has
Excellent conformability so is great for curves etc on planes -

the first I did last night went well, ideally needs some heat to get it worked right into the grain (much like making a banner) but with the warm sun on it it went ok, couldn’t move the plane as the guy had gone home and it was about 100m further than my power lead! I was a bit concerned at first but after I’d finished i tried to peel off a bit I’d applied elsewhere as a test – poo to a blanket!! -
Fantastic !!
Sounds like you have got it sussed Hugh :appl:
I know where to come now when I get my private company jet 😀
Good luck with the rest mate, I look forward to the finished pictures
