Vinyl on Freshly painted walls
Posted by Ade Brown on 8 January 2009 at 18:09Hi all,
Ive got a job to quote on for a customer who wants their trading name on an internal wall that’s just been done in emulsion..
What vinyl would you use and would you use a lower tack application tape..?
What Vinyl you recommend (I use Met M7 day to day with Oracal app tape)Would you allow a curing time for emulsion before applying?
Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks
Ade

We did small section of our own wall a fortnight after it had been painted and it was fine with Oracal 651 and Conform App Tape.

economy matt vinyl works well on interior emulsioned walls….

Ade,
you can never guarantee against the paint coming off with the app tape, it depends if the surface was prepped properly before the paint.
so I would make sure your customer is aware before proceeding.
I had to refit some stone guard yesterday on a BMW touring, dealer tried fitting it themselves first, and got a few blemishes, guess what? a dirty great lump of paint came off when I removed the one they had fitted, and it wasnt stuck that well anyway., next time they may spend a few bob to get the job done right in the first place! (obviously at some point the car had been poorly refinished)Peter -
I agree stand off would be better – but that’s not what the customer wants!!
thanks all for the input!!
Peter – I had a transit to do before Christmas and it required the Transit logo taking off for vinyl to be applied across back door – problem was half came of fine but it appears someone had re-fixed the badge on using some sort of super glue – hence the Lacquer came off when i eventually got the remainder of black bonding off!!
1st time I’ve had a badge problem!!

I agree with Peter, too many variables for a definitive answer, if the wall hasn’t had the proper ‘mist coats’ then the paint will sit on it like a sheet of paper, proceed with maximum caution, as touching in peeled emulsion is well nigh impossible.

I agree with Peter. If you do fit the text though, always a good idea t wet the application tape before removing, as it will reduce the adhesion and let go a lot easier.

Hi most of our work is done on exhibition stands on site which are painted the day before the graphics go on, we use Mac Tac 8900 range in matt. we use a low tac application tape for these as if the walls are fresh the application tape can leave a mark. If the walls are a dark colour you will have more problems than with light colours, it is something to do with the pigment in the paint. Also if the room is variale in temperature this can cause problems with vinyl lifting, but just make the customer aware that there is no vinyl specifically made for emulsion.
Cheers
