hi having a cost problem and could do with some advice pls.

25 linear metres of silver vinyl (supplied by customer) to install out of hours to internal windows in a shopping centre.

i checked with a subcontract firm who quoted me £15 per L/m labour only.

i do a lot of work for this customer so went in at £11 per L/m but he had a fit and reckoned i could do it in 4 hours and wont pay £68.75 an hour..

surely it doesnt matter how long it takes thats my skill level…but is that about rite for a trade fitting rate?

i dont want to fall out over a fitting rate…but it has to be worth it?

    any comments greatly recieved.

    Out of hours?

    Shopping centre rules and regulations?

    Travel?

They make me laugh. They’ve all know exactly how long a job will take. It’s funny how they all underestimate it when it suits them though.

Stuff him. Don’t drop your price !!!!

How wide is this vinyl. A 4″ strip or 4′ roll?

I’ve done a fair bit of work out of hours on shopping malls & public spaces. Remember to factor in enough time/money to write up a method statement & COSHH data sheet if required.

My flat rate is £25p/h plus travel costs. Some people baulk at this – others go “that’s a good deal” depending on what else they’ve been quoted.

It’s always marked up afer hours by at least 25% as I don’t want to be badging up ‘kiddy cars’ at 11pm again because I’m not allowed on the ‘floor’ until 7.30pm without some recompense!

As John says – stick to you guns, just let them know that yes, they CAN get it cheaper…but will it be any good?

4ft in some places thinner in other so to cover glass totally some will need to be in two parts….

but the total length applied will be 25 metres.

see i normally charge an hourly rate but this guy likes to know what the costs are from the start and i not flat out busy but i dont want to give my time away…

doesnt look like i am going to get a call back..

    edited once for bad gramma..

I reckon labour at £11 to £15 per linear metre (at 610 wide) is reasonable. I fitted etch glass onto windows at a hairdressers yesterday. In total I used 15 metres of etch glass vinyl and the job took me 5 hours (not including travelling), though that also included fitting lettering to the windows before fitting the etch glass vinyl.

I reckon you could fit 25 metres in 4 hours – but it would need two of you to do it in that time 😕 . A more realistic timescale would be 6 – 8 hours for one experienced person.

An ex-employee, now self employed fitting trade work [for the last 5yrs] wouldn’t be able to charge that amount……and that is maybe the problem.

I think £200 seems about right depending on travel, paperwork etc.

Wouldn’t budge on price though…… [also seems like a two man job?]

    Cheers

nice and spacious with plenty of glass to temp stick reverse of vinyl so the backing paper can be released, then its just a matter of transferance..very wet!

i consider this an easy job to do as they are big windows but just wanna get the costs right..but as the posts show we are about a hundred and fifty squid adrift from different in puts…

    £11 per linear metre @ 25 m = £275.00

or £25 per hour and i reckon 5 hrs with travel since im well local = £125.00

but blow out the rates and cost the job indivdually and we agree on £200.00 ???

how mad is that…have to wait and see.

    thanks for help

story so far! for those interested.

after being told that a bigger company with larger overheads would charge £144.00 for this install job, i decided to go under cover and contact the company in question…after changing a few key elements that i knew would not effect the price but would not get questioned as a doubled up enquiry, i came away with the advice of:

25m linear of my supplied vinyl applied to glass in unsociable hours would take their install crew of x2people 16 hours to complete and would charge a mere £675.00 +vat for the pleasure!!!

well thats a hell of a diffrence to 144.00+vat dont ya think in fact £531.00 of a diffence….

i really dont know what to say apart from do i have mug written on my forehead!

Can’t help on the price but I’d say phill is on the money with the time scale. 6 – 8 hours would be what I’d be quoting on too.

If the customer is convinced it will only take 4 hours, let him do it.
