    Hello All,
I have been asked by a beautician to put vinyl swirls on the wall of their salon. I tried to sell digital wallpaper but they are clear with what they want.

The walls are very smooth, so no problems there.

The environment is very humid and there is a lot of steam about.

Is there a vinyl specifically for walls, (they are painted) or what would anyone recommend.

    thanks

    Dan

we use 3m 30 series matt vinyls with avery low tack application tape.
Best combination i have found. Everybody says that matt vinyl needs high tack application take but bullshit 🙂 this combination works like clockwork.
BUT.. it works well just with 3m and avery, not with avery vinyl and avery low tack application tape.
With avery low tack , it takes about 20sec to take off 1.2×2 metres of application tape from a wall, with high tack application tape, it takes about 30 mins because all the vinyl wants to come off too.
sorry for my bad english, but the point is that we sell a lot of wall stickers with this combination. And it really works. And believe me, i have tried lots of vinyls with lots of application tapes.

    😮

I always use matt and as Joe said in the 8900 range works very well. I find the worst bit getting the app tape of at times but matt is the way to go.

Oracal have recently launched a vinyl purposely for wallpaper. it can be applied as a colour, or cut in a plotter and applied as graphics.
it is matt finish and has a special adhesive that allows it to be repositioned should it need be. the adhesive is almost like a "post-it note" adhesive. so in early stages can be lifted and reapplied without damage to graphic or wall/wallpaper. it comes in various pastel colours as well as the reg….

i "think" 3M do one similar to above also… i say think because i was speaking to someone else about the oracal stuff and they said 3M do on.
    maybe worth looking into….

as suggested, ide say ANY matt vinyl will do the trick.
most good brands offer a matt range as it is used for exhibition graphics etc where there is lots of lights so gloss doesn’t do the job as good.
the downside of regular matt vinyl is the agressive initial bite on the painted walls.

Rob sounds good but how would the app tape come off without the vinyl pulling off the wall ??

    haven’t a clue! :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

nah, seriously though… i recon they will suggest you use "low-tack" application tape. it is available from oracal, though i only ever use high-tack as an alrounder.

I agree with what has been said, but I’d be using a solvent adhesive over a waterbased one is there is ‘lots of steam about’.

Its not so much the adhesive on the tape that will cause an issue, but the painted surface.

To get a good adhesion, it will need to be cleaned with sugar soap or similar, because paint is porous and will retain ‘rubbish’ that will make adhesion harder.

A semi gloss or gloss painted wall is easier to apply to than a matt painted surface too.

Apply the graphic dry to a clean wall, leave for a few minutes before removing the app tape (low tack) and you should be right.

Thanks guys for your replies!! Anyone know a code for the new oracal wall vinyl? Then I can compare it with the 3m one! Will post some pics when its done! She would like beige walls with aubergine swirls!!

    cheers

as i wrote yesterday, try 3m 30 series and avery low tack application tape.
easy to apply even to a wallpaper. 3m feels "thicker" and doesnt stretch as easily as avery matt vinyls. Vinyl stays on the wall and doesnt come off.
for example: http://jokilaaksonmerkinta.com/images/t … /seina.jpg our bedroom. 2m wide, application tape took about 1.5 minutes to remove.
And that wall paper feels a bit hairy or furry or how do you call it.
Opening the sticker is also very easy, even the little parts lifts nicely with low tack application tape, thats the only thing i dont understand.
But who cares, as long as it works, eh?

    No
there are quite a few types and grades, not sure if it would look good though on anything less than a perfectly flat wall. Its not optical anywhere near a mirror and doesnt reflect images well, if you want a good looking and durable job, mirror dibond would be a better choice, buy expensive for the better stuff.

yeah polyester mirror chrome would look crap on a wall mate. every bump, scratch, chip would be exaggerated through the foil and just look terrible.
as peter says… its not mirror as such… more a tin foil finish.
dibond and the like are the best solution but even they are not true mirror.
i would go with real safety back mirror as it will do the job 100%, you get the finish you are after and it will be cheaper than dibond if sourced right.
probably end up looking like a bit of a nightclub though. 😀

I applied vinyl to Emily’s bedroom wall about 3 years ago, and it’s still there with no hassle. I used banner vinyl …….. it worked a treat and low tack app tape.
