vinyl for safety helmets
Posted by Kevin Thomas on 1 September 2010 at 20:40Hi, First time on the forum.
Can anyone help? client today has asked me to supply them with graphics for hard hats (size 18mm x 70mm). Problem is the adhesive has to comply with health and safety legislation BS EN 397:1995. has anyone ever come across this problem, or know were I can buy this material?

Yup – I’ve come across this before – H&S fanaticism driven to it’s extreme.
Don’t waste your time – Just tell them you can’t do it and move on to more lucrative work.

I have heard this before, it is to do with the integrity of the plastic, mainly to do with crash helmets, which I get, because it weakens the integrity of the helmet, but for a hard hat, it seems well over the top, and I have to agree with Phill, is it worth the hassle, the info relating to the BS number will be on the COSHH data sheet which a vinyl manufacturer could supply but unless your middle name is Sherlock and have a lot of time to spend it could end up costing more than just the cost of a few calls, would you have to issue some kind of liabilty insurance with each sticker ?, if they are going that far initially they may require some form of insurance as a supplier (could get messy). I believe that most water based adhesives are suitable & its what i have used in the past but has to passing the BS to keep H&S happy i wouldn’t know.

Hi There,
Yep you need an agressive waterbased adhesive, either Fascal supertack or Oracal 1640 high tack are commonly used for this.
Hope this helps.
