    Hi all,

I have a question with regards to edging on vinyl. when for example applying vinyl on the back of a sprinter van for example, the part where in the middle of the van you have the edges of the 2 doors which open out. If applying vinyl there what is the best way to cut and apply the vinyl. I have noticed that even a heat gun can be difficult to get the edge of the vinyl to slightly fold over and is there a way of getting the vinly edge where you are cutting to finish nicely??

    thanks

    Phillip
Using a scalpel or a *snap off knife" i would cut down the vinyl before removing the app tape. the technique is to run the blade down the edge of the door that does not have the seal attached to it, but at a double angle, the blade is angled away from the paint, and also slightly towards the other door. then using a pastic squeeqee, fold in the 2 edges, if all is clean and dry then the vinyl should not need additional heat.
    Hope my explanation is understandable.

As Peter says. Keep the knife at a good angle around 45 degrees on a downward stroke. Be positive and aim to cut through in one movement. Each time you stop you will get a jagged part to the edge.
I use a long blade so that the tip doesn’t come to the edge easily and mess it up. If you look closely at the blade edge it is ground to an angle each side. I aim to run this angled part flat against the panel edge, so in fact the knife blade will be tilted in towards the vinyl slightly.
Especially if doing it without application tape, once you have cut the piece on the sharper edge of a panel join, place a metal rule behind the remaining vinyl where it is running off the other edge and stick the vinyl to it. Now the vinyl can be held with slight tension to make a neat cut against the more rounded second edge (as on a door shut area).
