Hi, Ive just re-registered having been away for a while and need some advice. Did some flat application to a side of a truck, no problems on one side, though come to the other side, every time I took the application tape off, the vinyl stretched (avery 9 series, was from the pantone selectin). Vinyl was applied wet and dry to reduce any amount of bubbles stretching etc, but didnt help. So took the off cut back to base to test if it was us, nope! it went on okay on a window and our own vehicle.
Can someone let me know what has gone wrong, as I have asked the supplier for more to replace the strips that have gone wrong, and dont want the same problem wehen I go back to rectify…. 🙁 🙁 🙁 (chat.) PLEASE HELP

im not sure if i reading this correct so bear with me if i way off! 😕

the vinyl applys properly to one side of truck but not the other.
it applies to glass and your vehicle properly also..

i would have to assume the problem is in the surface of the truck on one side. 🙄

what do you use to clean the vehicle down before applying?

what is the difference in the application on the good side to the bad?

is the truck panel smooth or a different surface on one side in anyway?

was one side in direct sunlight while the other in shade?

what are yuo using to apply it wet? rapidtac etc?

    Hi Robert
Yeap you got the idea. The truck was under cover overnight and when we went to apply the strips. There was no sunlight to the bad side, so cant work it out. Used meth/diluted with fairy liquid to applied the strips on. To clean the surface meth undiluted was used and then wiped over again with diluted fariy liquid (minimum) and finally dried wipe over.

The difference between the two sides; Good side, no problem when applied, but the app tape still pulled away the vinyl even after an hour later, but no major problems though. As for the bad side, it completely destroyed and stretched the vinyl.. Unfortuately I am unable to say what type of app tape was on the vinyl as the client supplied the graphics from another source.

The truck panels are completely smooth so cant tell what went wrong. I got told by Avery that hardly any pressure should be applied when applying Avery 900 series, Pantone range, What do you think?

Im going to see the client tommorow to trace the strips that need to be replaced (as we didnt supply the graphics) then arrange a re-fitting date. What advice can you make out of this? Is it a good idea to apply someone else graphics? 😳

i think the problem here is that the water has not been expelled from below the vinyl. well not enough anyway.. or that you are trying to remove the app tape too soon after applying wet.

im guessing this of course but that is what i think if you have applied it wet.

the warm side of the vehicle (in sunlight) will help the vinyl bite onto the surface of the vehicle with better results than the side in the shade. that side will have no heat and very little grip under the same period of time. so when it comes to removing the tape the letters will start to lift and when trying to release the tape from the letters you will cause stretching and creases.

try reading this discussion on wet and dry application. it may help understand a bit better what i am trying to say.

one method of wet application i have tested, is using rapid-tac. it did have much better results than water.
