  • Vinyl application, Float-on wet or not?

Posted by Billy Lawton on 16 November 2011 at 08:24

Hi everyone – doing my first application today – only a small job on a car – just text. Should I use float – on solution spray just for text – I don’t obviously want any bubles as the guy (a mate) is a bit fussy.

Just wondering if you all use a spray (float or soap) for every vinyl application?

    I appreciate your wise words.

    Billy

Hi Billy, I am not the most experienced here but I think my answer is what you will get from others. If it is just vinyl lettering on a car, do it dry. I think if it is wet the lettering would come away with the app tape unless you left it a long time to dry first.

I presume you have practiced on your own car first to get the feel of it? It’s hard to get bubbles on just lettering. Flood coating is another matter :lol1:

Do it dry, its only leteers so should be no problem. I see in another thread you have wasted 5m of vinyl, consider this practice material.

Brilliant- thanks David – dry it is! Yes I’ve had plenty of practice – my uncle has a body shop and he’s mounted a "door" on a wall that I’ve practiced on.

Thank you – cold out there today!!

Billy, I usually use a firm felt squeegee on vehicles as they conform better on the curves. I then rub down with a plastic one.
Don’t do it wet, you’ll be there all day.

Like the other boys have said mate do it dry. Use a good pressure on your squeegee just using the sharp edge to hit the vinyl, keep using over lapping strokes and expect to re do the job 😉

Just another bit, little tiny bubbles will disappear over a week or so depending on weather.

Good on ya for giving it a go.

As you said it is getting colder out, I would give it some heat after application to starts the glues working.

Also prep the surface well to degrease.
