  • Versacamm missing a section of print

Last week I had some major issues with my printer misreading crop marks and causing problems with cut alignment. Whilst I was troubleshooting this I noticed that the printer started misreading the media width by a consistent 4mm at the left grit roller. As the error was consistent I managed to work around this however today I have encountered a totally different (but related) problem.

Below is an image of the problem. Basically the printer is missing a 4mm wide section down the entire length of the print on the left side (as you look at the machine).

I spoke to a few engineers last week who said that they had never seen a consistent error like this, and normally problems with the encoder strip or ribbon result in random problems then eventually the media width reading zero. I had a head and new style pump installed about 3 months ago and also had the firmware updated to operate the pump properly etc. Could this be a firmware issue?

    Any help/advice is much appreciated!

    just a thought.
    well spotted
tell the engineers that. if that is the 3rd mark the dot is in the wrong place and the ‘L’ is upside down. and as you spotted to far away from the dot.

i would be tempted to have the firmware changed or reloaded as those marks are generated by the machine not VW or CR. as i understand it.

Thanks for the reply Chris. The mark in the image is the second mark so the L shape is the correct way up. Sorry the photo’s probably a bit misleading.
I just had another go at printing the same file this morning and it came out perfectly.

This is really strange. I can work round this problem but I don’t really want to. I’d like to get an idea of the issue before I pay for a service engineer to come out and start replacing parts. If it is a firmware problem, where can I get a copy of the latest firmware? At the moment I am running 6.90.

    Thanks, Owen

so the mark is not for the black print above it ?

Yep the mark is for the print above it. After trying to explain it I was even confusing myself. Here’s a diagram 🙂

very strange, more so because it’s not doing it every time.

There is not sun coming flooding into the building near the machine that might be confusing it reading the encoder? I would have said damaged encoder strip if it wasn’t for the fact it went on to print it correctly.

Did you re-rip the file when it printed correctly later – or was this a re-print of the previous RIP? If it was the ripped file that was sent again this would suggest a corruption of the file after it was sent from your computer which may help you to track down the cause.

The only suggestion I can make at the moment is to try a different USB cable.

It almost looks like a clear strip was in the artwork and sent to the rip.
Too simple I guess but checking the artwork in "no fill" mode or wireframe might be worth doing.

I agree with peter you may have left a box on the artwork coloured white
I would go back to the program you created the artwork in and recheck.

The artwork was fine. I checked it in Illy and there were no boxes or anything. I reprinted the file without re ripping and it came out perfectly.

The first issue I had (and currently still have) is that the machine is misreading the media width by a consistent 4mm less at the left roller. If you use the arrows buttons to move the knife over to the left of the printer it stops 4mm shy of the inner edge of the roller.

I think the two issues are related because the missing gap in the print measured exactly 4mm wide. At the moment I can work round it so I am reluctant to call an engineer out at this time.
