versacam sp540 problem printing perforated banner
Posted by Dan Osterbery on 23 May 2011 at 13:30Hi All,
i am trying to print a 120cm x 615cm banner on our versacam, when we print black portions of the image i am getting what looks like smudges or drop out on the white background. We have moved the head to the high position and it is still occuring? can anyone advise on what might be the cause and how we might rectify it? The banner material appears to be flat and doesnt appear to be lifting at all?thanks in advance

sounds like dreaded static could also be /
damage or contaminated surge sponge
dodgy head (damaged or just need a good manual clean to clear debri off)
misaligned head cablegood luck tho
-
thanks! just given it another seriously good clean! never seen anything like this in 6 years of the machine! weird!
thanks

My husband has had this problem before I’m sure he has. I’ll ask him when he’s back in! 😉

thanks, i have cleaned the heads manually and with the machine, raised the heads, vacuum is at 100%. I have spoken to a roland tech and the banner material manufacturer and neither of them can explain it! Any help much appreciated!

i have tried taking photos earlier to post to see if anyone has had a similiar problem but you dont really see the problem, they are little smudges around the black areas. I think i am just going to try to clean them off with alcohol or the roland cleaning fluid.
thanks

Smudges always in the same colour?? Are the more like dots on very close inspection or an actual smudge?
-
its reaaly difficult to tell as it is perforated banner! they appear to be little dots or lines but when they are all grouped together they look like a smudge! i have printed vinyl and ordinary banner material today and they have both come out fine, it is just on the perforated banner.
thanks again
Dan
sorry it is only happening on the black, other colours are fine!

Definately static no doubt about it then!! Try a little trick
Wipe the banner down with shaving foam!! Dry it thoroughly And also touch a piece of the banner with one hand whilst grounding yourself by touching the metal stand with other hand this will disapait any static through you/and printer then try it on the area you cleaned!!

Also when you unwind banner from roll can you hear the static crackling??

Hi no static when i unroll the banner, i have it furled on the floor because of the length of it,(dont want motor error) Will try shaving foam tomorrow and see what happens! Do i have to stand on one leg when i do it!!! lol
cheers

No but you have to say ‘Please Printer Print Properly this Pile of PVC" whilst rubbing your back with one hand and touching your nose with your elbow easy!
-
Mike, you do like your static.. lol
Should static be the issue (which is more unlikely if you have pre-fed the media out as stated) Roland suggest:
"
If media produces static electricity easily, the ink tends to
remain on the head surface while printing and results in ink
dropping. When [PERIODIC CL] is set to [1 min] to [990 min],
automatic cleaning is performed while printing and it may
prevent the ink dropping. "NB: Information pasted from the VS service manual. But I’m sure there is a Periodic Clean option on your machine.

Static cling reminds got my jobs done Lol
You should be working it’s a bit early for you to be on the net messing about. So it’s static then 😉

Hi Lee,
have done medium periodic clean, and then powerful and then a manual clean it is spotless! even changed the wipers whilst i was there! It is not droplets of ink but tiny little dots in close proximity when viewed from a meter away look like smudges! I will try to get some More macro photos, but the dots are so small, the camera doesn’t pick them up or distinguish them from the mesh.cheers
