  • vehicle preparation – old paintwork

Posted by Gary Davis on 13 March 2006 at 17:37

    Hi,

have a vehicle to do and when i went to measure up noticed the paint work is in pretty bad way, the clear coat is scratched and bubbled in places, but my main concern is under the bump strip on the sides.
its caked with tar and grime and paintwork scratched

my q is can anyone recommend a way to clean this up without causing further damage? would usually use IPA / meths, however i am hesitant to do this.

customer is insistant on using this area of the vehicle 🙄

    I wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.
Point out the defects to your customer,
and tell him cleanup is his responsibility.
Do you feel like replacing his paint job for free?
    Me neither!
    Better safe than sorry.
I have seen transfer & masking tape peel up bubbly paint.
    Love…Jill

Jill’s right not something you want to get involved in.
what you have to realise is, someone that drives a vehicle like this doesn’t really care about appearance. either that or they are skint… none the less they want the job done.

take a digital picture of the vans bad spots and type a few lines of text at the bottom stating that the customer is aware of the bad spots on the vehicle and that you have advised that any vinyls applied may look poor, break away flaky paint etc just get him to sign it….

doing this covers you for any come backs on the job, only takes ten minutes to do it and gives you peace if mind.

or you can take the chance and risk it, but be sure to strongly advise him on the defect areas before hand.

    cleaning, prepping the job?
warm soapy water and sponge… whatever that doesn’t take off, is not your job too.

thanks jill and rob, have told customer words to that effect.

they seem to think because we are fitting the graphics its our problem if they wont stick or come off!!!! which in any normal case i would agree but this paintwork aint great!!
