Hi, I literally just bought my first large format printer yesterday, an Epson 9600. I am a graphic designer and my only experience in printing large format is in the fine art world, i.e canvas and various art papers.

I am looking to advertise my business on the side of my car and on my back window but do not have the slightest clue as to what kind of materials I need to print on, in order to do this? Nor whether it is actually possible on the 9600?

I have had a quick scan through some of the other postings but can’t find anything directly related to the 9600 which leads me to believe it’s probably not the best solution for this kind of job! However on reading some of the other posts I believe I am looking for clear vinyl? Does this come paper backed which is then peeled off after print? I imagine I just reverse print for the window part? Also do you have to painfully cut out all the text after printing or do you just stick the whole printed panel on the car/window?

I have done a bit of wrapping before when I was a car valet during college time and I remember the actual text was ‘cut-out’ from the print. This is how I would prefer mine to be as i think it looks much better.

Anyway sorry for all the questions! There seems to be quite a few professionals on board though and i’m looking forward to getting more than just canvas’ etc printed on my 9600.

Thanks in advance to those who offer advice…

for paper base and canvas you have a wonderfull printer but for out door work you are limited by materials. epson do some vinyls at a price but will need laminating,
grafityp and others do a matt out door vinyl for your inks has to be laminated and fitted to flat panels only i dont know of a suitable clear vinyl if there is one it will have to be backed with white anyway.

i have a epson 9500 for the arty stuff but a solvent printer for all the other work.

I’d second what Chris said. You’ve got a great printer. Most people use that particular model for fine-art reproduction and it’s also commonly used for prepress proofing. The ink-set most people use with it, Ultrachrome, is great at producing long-life indoor print but really isn’t suitable for any type of outdoor work. I think you’d be better off prepping a file and talking to a local sign shop who has an outdoor rated printer like an eco-solvent, real-solvent or thermal resin system.

HI thanks for the advice. Think I will just outsource the job then. Was thinking I could maybe do it myself but wasn’t sure if possible with this printer. It’s just a one off so prob not worth setting it up myself anyway, thanks for the advice it’s appreciated…
