Any ideas on this one? I’ve been to several companies now who won’t quote me on my van and customers vehicles. It’s really getting annoying now as I can’t use my van or pick up customers vans / cars.

    Adam,

Do they give any reason for refusal?

Sign Elite only cover my own vehicle, they won’t allow me to pick up a vehicle for a customer.

Some of the traders policies I’ve been looking at (Road Risk) are just as bad, they cover valeters and car sales / mechanics, but not signwriters….. Short of taking a policy out just on my van, and having to tell people I can’t collect vehicles….I don’t know what to do!

I’ll try a couple that Peter has mentioned! I’ve been doing this all day now, what a waste.

Just realised Peter had said all from the same company! 😮

Just to clarify, I can insure my van….I didn’t make that clear above, I just can’t get the insurance I feel my business needs. I’m a sole trader and can’t afford to insure both my car and my van seperatly, plus I’ll be needing to pick vehicles up to work on them. I can’t use my van for personal use and sell the car because it’s not as cheap to run as my car is.

I’m really frustrated with the whole thing. I can drive anyone elses vehicle on my own car insurance fully comp, just not the van because I own it. I therefore have no "no claims" on the van, just 6 years on the car! Grrrr!

signelite just quoted for driving customer vans etc 2 people one 28 one 50+ £900.
just had to say thank you but no thank you. so the customers will have to bring them here or done on site.
think that we really only needed that bit 4 times in the last year, so for us not a justifiable expense.

just taken out new business ins with signelite and only a whisker dearer than previous but includes more relevant to our work.

SignElite said they didn’t do customer van insurance to me! Do they say what they feel like? I’m already looking at over £1000 to insure my van for just me with no contents!

yes you have to build up the second vehicle no claims ins. some co do introductory discounts if you insure both with them.

I am also insured with Sign Elite and also had the opportunity to take extra cover to drive customers vehicles but was going to cost an extra £500 😮

You can imagine what I said 🙄

I would go back to them to confirm.

    cheers

I think I need a motor trade policy to cover my own car as well. I’ve added my van to my car insurance for 1 month to allow me to use the van and car whilst I’m looking for the correct policy. I’ll keep going until I find what I need! I really don’t understand why some trade policies specifically exclude signwriters….it doesn’t make sense!

I got part way through one quote, and because I put graphics on for a Formula Ford Team, they wouldn’t quote me to drive customers cars!

    Drawing a blank there then!!

adam you can in a sdp way but if they cottoned on to it being used to collect a customers vehicle which would be business use. then not covered.

    Grrrr. aint half of it

I think my car is insured for business use as a long time ago, I was using my car for work whilst waiting for them to buy me a company car. 9 months later, the day before I was due to collect my company car, they sacked me / made me redundant. If I was sacked, I still don’t know why! Anyway, I don’t think I ever changed my policy back to social domestic / pleasure….I’ll need to check, but my van can only be on my policy for 1 month at a time for a max of 3 months!

Phone A plan insurance, they specialise in commercial vehicle insurance, I paid £400 the 1st year & I think £270 last year.

Try Quinn Direct, I’ve just insured my daughters car thru them and I was very pleased with the price. I’m going to try them when my van insurance is up for renewal.

    Might be worth a call.

I have a Motor Trades policy from Axa which covers our van, customers vehicles and directors/owners cars. The cost is based on drivers not vehicles. Can work out good value.

    Hi
i have Traders Policy plus additional use, which is required if you are going to use your vehicles for normal sign jobs like shop fronts etc. It is a misconception that a Traders policy is a blanket policy, without the additional use it only covers use connected with motor vehicles & your own SDP.

A friend of mine who runs a car audio company recommended AXA, so I’ll give them a call tomorrow.

    Thanks

Having had years of experience, driving collecting and transporting high value vehicles, its not the road risk that is hard to get, any traders policy will cover road risks. usually with upper limit restrictions as to the value of the vehicle you are driving.
The reason they are expensive is because they are insuring you to drive any vehicle, that you don’t own, so your partner buys a Ferrari and you can drive it, that’s the risk they are taking on.
My last traders policy was with axa, and allowed be to drive ANY vehicle, with no restrictions on value, cost £3k (5 years ago)
The other thing which is more important is to consider, what would happen if you had an accident in a customers vehicle? your customer would not only want his vehicle repaired, but probably a replacement whilst his was of the road, or compensating for hiring a similar one.
traders policies do not usually cover consequential loss, so ask the question, and get what is and isnt covered in writing before taking out any policy.

at the end off the day do you really want to drive customers vehicles?
or just have them covered whilst on your premises.
    Peter
